What it is like
Jangheung is a small rural county on the south coast of Jeollanam-do, and each summer its county town turns the Tamjin River, which runs straight through Jangheung-eup, into a nine-day water playground. The festival started in 2008 as a gentle riverside event of rafts, wooden boats and bare-handed fish catching. Today it is built around the 'biggest water fight on earth', a free, open-to-all battle with water guns and water cannons that starts at 14:00 every day and lasts an hour on weekdays and two hours at weekends. The opening Saturday begins with the Salsu Daecheop street parade, which leaves the county community hall at 13:00 and sprays its way down Jungang-ro to the river. In the afternoons visitors wade in to grab 'golden fish' (giant eels), ride wooden, banana and peanut boats, and use a large water slide and a children's play pool; entry and the water fight are free, while some rides and programmes cost ₩2,000–7,000. After dark the focus moves to stages and food. In 2026 there was a K-pop concert from the government's MyK Festa programme, a rock night, an EDM party and a riverside night-food area, with programmes listed until 23:00. Two satellite sites, the Jeongnamjin Pyeonbaek cypress-forest Woodland about 4 km out of town and Papillon Zip, added K-drama filming-location experiences and a camping stay. Attendance was about 690,000 in 2024, 493,165 in 2025 (when heavy rain and heat advisories kept numbers down) and 448,000 in 2026, the year the culture ministry named it an honorary culture-tourism festival and a prospective global festival. Honest caveats: this is a mass soaking at the peak of Korean summer heat, so expect to be wet from head to toe anywhere near the water-fight area and to queue for boats; programmes and announcements are in Korean; the festival is spread over three sites; and Jangheung is a long way from Seoul, with the last direct bus back leaving in the afternoon in autumn 2026, so visitors who stay for the evening concerts usually sleep locally or continue to Gwangju.
Highlights
- 'Biggest water fight on earth' every day at 14:00 by the Tamjin River: free, with water guns, water cannons, team battles and a giant volleyball match (60 minutes on weekdays, 120 minutes at weekends in 2026)
- Salsu Daecheop street parade on the opening Saturday at 13:00, from Jangheung County Community Hall along Jungang-ro into the water-fight area
- 'Catch the golden fish': wading into the river after giant eels, daily at 15:00
- Water Play Zone with wooden, banana and peanut boats, a large water slide, a children's water play zone and an event pool (some rides ₩2,000–7,000)
- Evening concerts: a MyK Festa K-pop night, the Jangheung Rock Festival and the Water Beat EDM party in 2026, plus a riverside night-food area
- Papillon Zip and the Pyeonbaek Forest Woodland: K-drama filming-location experiences, an AR mission tour and a camping stay
Who it suits. Best for families with children, groups of friends and anyone happy to be soaked in midsummer heat, plus K-pop and band fans for the evening concerts; less suited to visitors who want a quiet riverside day, need English-language programmes, or cannot spare a long trip to the far south-west (about 4 h 20 m by bus from Seoul each way).
Getting there
From Seoul
Direct express buses run from Seoul Central City Terminal (Honam Line) to Jangheung Intercity Bus Terminal, seven a day in October 2026, taking about 4 h 20 m (₩48,100 deluxe, ₩59,000 premium). The terminal is in Jangheung-eup, the same small town as the riverside grounds. By rail, take the KTX from Yongsan to Gwangju Songjeong (about 2 h, ₩42,000 standard), cross Gwangju to the U-Square bus terminal and take an intercity bus to Jangheung (about 1 h 30 m–2 h). Summer timetables can differ, so check before travelling.
From Busan
Intercity buses link Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal and Jangheung in about 4 h 06 m; the September 2026 listing shows three a day from Jangheung to Busan. Trains on the Mokpo–Boseong line also stop at Jeonnam Jangheung Station, two a day each way to and from Busan Bujeon in autumn 2026: a Mugunghwa (about 4 h 40 m, ₩17,700) and a Saemaeul (about 3 h 50 m, ₩26,300). Check train times in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station before the festival day. In 2026 Trazy ran a day tour from Busan Station (09:30 departure, about 4 hours each way).
From Incheon Airport
No airport-to-Jangheung bus was checked; go into Seoul and take the direct bus from Central City Terminal. In the other direction an overnight bus runs from Jangheung to Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2 (about 4 h 40 m, ₩72,300 in the September 2026 listing); check its departure time at the terminal.
Last leg from Jeonnam Jangheung Station (Mokpo–Boseong line)
Korail Mokpo–Boseong line (Saemaeul and Mugunghwa, two trains a day each way to and from Busan Bujeon). Distance to the riverside grounds not verified; in 2026 the free festival shuttle looped between the station, the Woodland, the public stadium and Papillon Zip (visitor's post)
Festival shuttle
The county ran shuttle buses in 2026. A visitor's post describes a free loop between Jeonnam Jangheung Station, the Pyeonbaek Forest Woodland, the public stadium and Papillon Zip, plus paid express shuttles to Gwangju, Mokpo, Suncheon and Busan (fares and times not published on the pages opened).
Getting home
Last departures for the 2027 festival dates were not checked. In autumn 2026 the last direct bus from Jangheung to Seoul Central City left in the afternoon, before the evening concerts; later journeys went via Gwangju (bus to U-Square, about 1 h 30 m, then an express bus to Seoul, or the KTX from Gwangju Songjeong to Suseo, about 2 h). The night concerts ran to about 22:00 in 2026, so for the evening programme plan to stay overnight. Check the last bus at Jangheung Intercity Bus Terminal and the last KTX in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) before the festival day.
Parking
A visitor's post lists free parking at the Jangheung County Office, the Jeongnamjin Water Science Museum and the Mannam Plaza lots in 2026, and suggests parking at the county office or the public stadium and riding the shuttle, since weekends fill early. No official parking plan was opened.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm
- The official festival site (jangheung.go.kr/festival; the old festival.jangheung.go.kr address no longer resolves) could not be opened, so shuttle routes and times, the parking plan, individual ride prices and camping-stay booking were not read from the organizer.
- 2027 dates are not announced as of 19 October 2026; whether the 20th edition starts on 24 or 31 July is unknown.
- Shuttle and parking details come only from a visitor's community post (free loop via Jeonnam Jangheung Station; paid express shuttles to Gwangju, Mokpo, Suncheon and Busan with no fares given).
- Walking distance from Jangheung Intercity Bus Terminal and Jeonnam Jangheung Station to the riverside grounds was not verified.
- 2024 attendance differs by source: about 690,000 in the county's August 2024 review, versus about 675,000 implied by a July 2026 report.
