What it is like

Gwamegi is a winter speciality of the Pohang coast: whole saury (originally herring) hung outdoors on racks, warmed by the sun during the day and chilled by the East Sea wind at night, for about a week, until the flesh turns dark, oily and chewy. Locals eat it raw, wrapped in fresh seaweed or laver with a slice of raw garlic and a dab of chogochujang, a sweet and sour chili sauce. Guryongpo, a fishing town in Nam-gu on the south-east side of Pohang, is regarded as the home of the dish and is the country's largest producer; it was designated a gwamegi special industrial zone in 2007. The festival belongs to the producers: the Pohang Guryongpo Gwamegi Business Cooperative runs it, with Pohang City, on one weekend as the drying season gets going, on Ara Plaza, the square on the town's Gwamegi Culture Street. It is a small, local, entirely Korean-language event rather than a tourist spectacle; about 20,000 people came over the two days in 2025. What happens: free tastings of gwamegi and of gwamegi kimbap (the gentler way in for first-timers), stalls selling gwamegi, squid and other local seafood below market price, a 'surprise auction' show where local products go to the crowd at bargain bids, popular singers on the main stage, an amateur Guryongpo song contest, and tongue-in-cheek strength contests such as arm wrestling and pull-ups after eating gwamegi. In 2024 the town ran a parallel 1970s–80s retro event, 'Guryong For You', beside the house used as a set for the drama When the Camellia Blooms. Honest caveats: gwamegi is strong, fatty and fishy and not to everyone's taste (producers now sell milder low-odour versions for beginners), so try a free sample before buying; nothing is interpreted into English; the sea wind in late November is cold; and Pohang's KTX station is on the opposite side of the city, so the last leg to Guryongpo takes planning. Pair the visit with the Japanese-era house street, Guryongpo port and the town beach, all close to the plaza.

Highlights

  • Free gwamegi and gwamegi kimbap tastings, the easiest way to try half-dried saury before you buy
  • Gwamegi, squid and other local seafood sold below market price; the 2024 festival advertised 20–30% off gwamegi
  • A 'surprise auction' show where local seafood goes to the audience at bargain bids
  • Popular singers on the main stage (trot star Park Hyun-bin in 2024) and an amateur Guryongpo song contest
  • Strength contests after eating gwamegi, such as arm wrestling and pull-ups (2024 and 2025)
  • Close to the Guryongpo Japanese House Street; in 2024 the 'Guryong For You' retro event recreated the 1970s–80s beside the When the Camellia Blooms drama set

Who it suits. Best for food travelers curious about a regional winter speciality, seafood lovers who want gwamegi at producer prices, and anyone spending a November weekend in Pohang; less suited to people who dislike strong fish flavours, need English-language programmes, or want a large tourist-oriented festival.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Pohang Station takes about 2 h 20 m–2 h 30 m; trains also run from Suseo, and since the 1 Sep 2026 KTX–SRT merger both are booked in Korail's own apps and English site. Pohang Station is in Heunghae-eup, Buk-gu, on the north-west side of the city, while Guryongpo is in Nam-gu on the south-east coast, so finish the trip by taxi or Pohang city bus; that leg's route and journey time were not verified for this record. Intercity buses also run from Dong Seoul Terminal to Pohang Terminal.

From Busan

Donghae Line trains run from Bujeon Station to Pohang Station about 7 times a day: KTX-Eum takes 1 h 28 m–1 h 30 m (₩18,100) and ITX-Maeum 1 h 58 m–2 h 06 m (₩13,900), standard class. Or take an intercity bus from the Haeundae intercity bus stop to Pohang Terminal, which is in Nam-gu like Guryongpo: roughly hourly, about 1 h 28 m, ₩15,200 deluxe. Then finish by taxi or Pohang city bus to Guryongpo as above; Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo) lists no direct bus to Guryongpo. Check the times in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the terminal before you go.

Last leg from Pohang Station (KTX)

Donghae Line (KTX from Seoul Station and Suseo). Not walkable: the station is in Heunghae-eup, Buk-gu, across the city from Guryongpo-eup in Nam-gu; take a taxi or city bus

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was documented for 2024 or 2025.

Getting home

The 2024 festival ran until 20:00. The last trains from Pohang Station to Seoul Station and Suseo on the festival dates were not checked: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the station before you go. Because the cross-city transfer from Guryongpo to the station is long, leave the festival by early evening or stay the night in Pohang.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask

When is the Guryongpo Gwamegi Festival 2026?

Probably Saturday–Sunday 14–15 November 2026 at Guryongpo Ara Plaza: those are the dates on the festival's 2026 poster, printed in K-Festival magazine's October 2026 issue (enquiries 054-270-8282). As of 21 October 2026 Pohang City had not announced them and no press report had appeared; the city has announced the dates only a few days ahead, so check again in early November.

Is the Guryongpo Gwamegi Festival free?

Yes. Entry is usually free and the gwamegi and gwamegi kimbap tastings have cost nothing; you pay only for what you buy, and gwamegi is usually sold about 20–30% off at the festival.

What is gwamegi and how do you eat it?

Saury (originally herring) dried outdoors in the cold sea wind for about a week until it is dark, rich and chewy. Wrap a piece in fresh seaweed or laver with raw garlic and chogochujang, a sweet and sour chili sauce.

KTX from Seoul Station (or Suseo) to Pohang Station, about 2 h 20 m–2 h 30 m, then a taxi or city bus across Pohang to Guryongpo-eup. The station is on the far side of the city, so allow extra time for the last leg.

13:00–20:00 in 2024, according to the festival listing. The 2025 hours were not published in the sources opened.

What else is there to see in Guryongpo?

What we could not confirm

  • Confirm 14–15 Nov 2026 at Ara Plaza from Pohang City or the organizer: so far the dates appear only on the festival's poster as printed in K-Festival magazine (October 2026, page 98; enquiries 054-270-8282). Pohang City announced the 2024 dates on 13 Nov 2024, three days ahead, so recheck local news in early November.
  • Hours (13:00–20:00) and free entry are from a third-party festival listing for 2024; 2025 hours and entry terms were not stated in the sources opened.
