What it is like

Buncheong (분청사기) is stoneware coated with white slip, made in Korea from the late Goryeo period to the middle of the 16th century. Gimhae, whose pottery tradition is traced back about 2,000 years to the Gaya kingdoms, is one of the country's largest buncheong-making areas, and its festival began in 1996. For 30 years it was held around the Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum and the Clayarch Gimhae Museum in Jillye-myeon, a village of pottery studios in the west of the city. Since 2024 it has been run jointly by the Gimhae Pottery Association and the Gimhae Culture & Tourism Foundation, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism listed it as a preliminary culture-and-tourism festival for 2024–2025.

2026 breaks with tradition. The 31st edition was first announced for March 2026, ahead of remodelling work at Clayarch, then moved back to the autumn when an apartment project in Jillye was expected to send about 600 construction-truck round trips a day along the village's main roads during the festival. On 27 July 2026 the pottery association chose Lotte Garden Park, part of the Lotte shopping and leisure complex around Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae in Jangyu. The city calls the move a one-off, but has not said whether the festival will return to Jillye in 2027.

The heart of the festival is still the market: an exhibition and sale of work by local potters, from classic buncheong to experimental pieces, which the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) says sells at 30–40% below usual prices. Around it are traditional kiln firing, demonstrations of large-scale pottery making, a public ceramics auction, hands-on booths (potter's wheel, decorating, an excavation game), family contests in pottery making and clay stacking, and performances. In 2026 it is open 10:00–20:00, closing at 18:00 on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November.

The honest caveats: the 2026 site is new and entirely outdoors, since no indoor space was secured, so booths are being set up with rain and strong wind in mind. Admission, workshop prices, shuttles and the parking plan had not been published by 18 October. Jangyu has no railway station, so visitors without a car finish the trip by taxi or local bus. To see the festival's traditional setting, the free Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum in Jillye remains open (closed on Mondays).

Highlights

  • First edition outside Jillye-myeon in the festival's history: Lotte Garden Park, beside Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae in Jangyu, 6–10 November 2026
  • Exhibition and sale of buncheong ware and tableware by local potters (40–50 vendors had applied by August 2026); KTO says pieces sell at 30–40% below usual prices
  • Traditional kiln firing, large-scale pottery-making demonstrations and a public ceramics auction
  • Hands-on booths (potter's wheel, decorating ceramics, an excavation game) and family pottery-making and clay-stacking contests
  • Held every year since 1996; about 57,800 visitors over six days in 2025, up from about 37,000 in 2024
  • Gimhae's pottery links with Arita in Japan, through the Gimhae-born potter Baek Pa-seon (1560–1656): an Arita delegation of 23 performed at the 2025 festival

Who it suits. Best for ceramics lovers and anyone who wants handmade Korean tableware at festival prices, families with children (clay play and family contests), and shoppers already heading to Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae. Less suited to travellers who rely on trains alone: Jangyu has no station, so the last leg is a taxi or local bus.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Changwon Jungang (about 2 h 44 m, standard fare ₩47,000–47,400 since 1 Sep 2026) or to Busan Station (₩54,400, more trains), then a taxi to Lotte Garden Park in Jangyu; or fly to Gimhae International Airport and take a taxi. Jangyu has no railway station; Lotte lists buses 58, 59, 97 and 98 from Changwon, but the stop nearest Changwon Jungang and the taxi and bus times to the festival were not verified. By car the site is in the Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae complex (551 Jangyu-ro).

From Busan

Jangyu lies on the Busan side of Gimhae, but the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail does not go there. Lotte's directions to the outlet complex: buses 220 or 221 from Hadan Station on the Busan Metro (every 30–40 minutes), or the light rail to Buwon Station, Exit 2, then Gimhae bus 3 or 3-1; from Gimhae Intercity Bus Terminal, bus 3-1 (about every 30 minutes) or 22 (every 20–30 minutes). Journey times were not verified. A taxi from Gimhae International Airport or Sasang (both on the light rail; ₩1,300 per section by transport card) also works; Gimhae city buses cost ₩1,450 by card, ₩1,500 cash. Organizers chose the site partly because it is easier to reach from Busan and Changwon than Jillye.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station and the KTX to Changwon Jungang or Busan as above, or a domestic flight to Gimhae International Airport and a taxi to Jangyu.

Festival shuttle

No 2026 shuttle had been announced as of 18 October 2026. At the old Jillye site in 2025 the festival ran shuttle buses from temporary car parks.

Getting home

The festival closes at 20:00 on Friday to Sunday and at 18:00 on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November; add the taxi or bus ride to whichever station you use (Changwon Jungang or Busan). Korail's timetable changes on 1 November 2026 and the last KTX times for the festival dates were not verified, so check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station before the festival day.

Parking

Lotte Garden Park is inside the Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae complex, whose car parks organizers expect to ease the parking problems of the Jillye years; a detailed 2026 parking and traffic plan was still being prepared in mid-October. Expect busy outlet traffic at weekends.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Neither dates nor venue had been announced as of 18 October 2026: the city calls the 2026 move to Jangyu a one-off, but officials said a return to Jillye could not be guaranteed because apartment construction there continues into 2027. expected Jillye-myeon (Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum and Clayarch) or Lotte Garden Park in Jangyu; undecided as of 18 October 2026.
2026 6–10 Nov 2026 confirmed Outdoor booths at Lotte Garden Park in the Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae area of Jangyu (Sinmun-dong), next to Lotte Water Park. No indoor space was secured, so booths are designed for rain and strong wind. Gimhae City agreed with Lotte to use the site free of charge.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae (롯데프리미엄아울렛 김해점)Before or after

A two-storey street-style outlet mall of about 270 brands along a 500 m Y-shaped walk, with restaurants upstairs and a children's playground. Next door to the festival, it suits lunch or shopping before or after the booths: open 10:30–20:00 on regular days (21:00 on extended days), so there is time after the 18:00 close on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November. Tip: parking is free during opening hours, so leave fragile ceramics in the car first.

Getting there: In the same Lotte complex as the festival, about 200 m on foot (KTO listing)

  • Getting awayAfter

Jangyu has no railway station, and weekend outlet traffic slows taxis and buses. From the complex, buses 220 and 221 run to Hadan Station in Busan every 30–40 minutes, buses 3 and 3-1 to Buwon Station on the light rail, and routes 58, 59, 97 and 98 towards Changwon (Lotte's directions). Leave plenty of time to reach your station for the last KTX, and book it in advance.

Where is the 2026 festival held?

At Lotte Garden Park, beside Lotte Premium Outlets Gimhae in Jangyu (551 Jangyu-ro, Sinmun-dong). It is the first time the festival has left Jillye-myeon, where it was held around the Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum for 30 years; the move was made because heavy construction traffic was expected on Jillye's roads.

Is the festival free?

No 2026 fee had been announced by 18 October. In 2025 entry was free and some programmes were paid; KTO's Korean listing marks 2026 as paid without an amount. Hands-on workshops cost extra, and their 2026 prices were not published.

Can I buy ceramics there, and are they cheaper?

Yes, the sale of work by local potters is the core of the festival. KTO says plates, teapots and other pieces sell at 30–40% below usual prices. In 2025 a ceramics receipt of ₩100,000 or more earned 10% off at designated restaurants.

How do I get there from Busan?

Jangyu has no railway station and is not on the Busan–Gimhae Light Rail. Lotte's directions to the outlet complex: buses 220 or 221 from Hadan Station on the Busan Metro (every 30–40 minutes), or the light rail to Buwon Station and Gimhae bus 3 or 3-1 (₩1,450 by card). A taxi from Gimhae International Airport or Sasang also works. Journey times were not verified.

What is buncheong?

Buncheong (분청사기) is Korean stoneware coated with white slip, made from the late Goryeo period to the middle of the 16th century. Gimhae is one of Korea's largest buncheong-making areas, and its studios still work in the style.

Can I see where the festival used to be held?

Yes. The Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum in Jillye-myeon is free, 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30), closed on Mondays. Next door, Clayarch Gimhae Museum's Dome House was listed as closed for construction in September 2026, so check before you go.

What we could not confirm

  • The official festival site (festival.buncheong.co.kr) could not be opened from this environment, so the 2026 daily timetable, admission, workshop prices, shuttle and parking details were not verified.
  • 2026 admission: KTO's Korean listing says 'paid' with no amount, while its English, Japanese and Chinese listings (2025 content) say free with paid programmes.
  • Prices of hands-on workshops (potter's wheel, decorating, contests) for 2025 and 2026 were not found.
  • Public transport to Lotte Garden Park: bus routes are from Lotte's outlet page, but journey times, the stop nearest Changwon Jungang and taxi times were not verified, and no shuttle had been announced for 2026.
  • Whether the festival returns to Jillye-myeon in 2027, and the 2027 dates.
  • Whether the festival was designated a 2026–2027 culture-and-tourism festival by MCST (it was a preliminary festival for 2024–2025); no designation list naming it was found.
  • KTO's English listing still shows the old Jillye address and should be checked once updated; coordinates are from KTO's Korean listing map.
  • Last train back to Seoul from Changwon Jungang or Busan on the festival dates under the Korail timetable in force from 1 Nov 2026 (the October 2026 times, from a third-party mirror, were removed).
  • Remodelling dates at Clayarch (Dome House closed for construction) were not published on the pages opened.
  • 2023 dates come only from Stars and Stripes Korea; the 2025 visitor total is the city's figure as reported by Kukinews.
