The 20th edition ran 19 June–6 July 2026 with 34 productions from seven countries; 2027 dates had not been announced as of 19 October 2026, but the last three editions opened on the third Friday of June. Tickets are sold show by show: the 2026 opening production was on NOL Ticket, which links to its English site NOL World, and foreigners got 30% off with a passport, while a festival booth sells ₩10,000 tickets to the main shows and the University Musical Festival is free. What it is like

DIMF grew out of a pilot festival in 2006 and has been held every summer since; the 2026 edition was the 20th. For 18 days it fills Daegu's large theatres with overseas productions, many of them new to Korea, DIMF's own musicals and new Korean works it has helped develop, plus a University Musical Festival and an awards night. The festival director said in 2026 that Daegu has 10 theatres with more than 1,000 seats, and the programme moves between them: the Daegu Culture & Arts Center and Kolon Outdoor Music Hall in Duryu Park, Keimyung Art Center, Suseong Artpia, Ayang Arts Center, Bongsan Culture Center, the Daegu Opera House in earlier years, and a downtown cinema, CGV Daegu Hanil, which screens recorded Japanese productions.

The 2026 edition (19 June–6 July) had 34 productions from seven countries. DIMF's signature musical Turandot returned after seven years as the co-opening production; visiting shows included Into the Woods from the US, Barbershopera from the UK, Les Virtuoses from France and the Chinese musical Bao Yu, which won the grand prize. The opening ceremony was an outdoor gala of musical stars at Kolon Outdoor Music Hall on 20 June, the first outdoor opening in three years: in 2024 rain moved it indoors, and in 2025 the weather cancelled it. About 36,000 people saw performances and about 160,000 took part in all.

For a foreign visitor, the practical points are these. Every production is ticketed separately and the line-up changes completely from year to year, so check what is on before planning a trip. The 2026 co-opening production was sold on NOL Ticket, whose page links international users to the English NOL World site; foreigners got 30% off with a passport or alien registration card, and the show was performed in Korean with English and Chinese subtitles. Other productions state their own subtitle arrangements, and most festival information is in Korean. A festival booth sells 'Happiness for ₩10,000' tickets to the main shows, and the University Musical Festival is free. The festival falls at the start of the rainy season, which disrupted the outdoor opening in both 2024 and 2025.

Highlights

  • 34 productions from seven countries over 18 days in 2026: 13 official invited works, 6 creative-support premieres, 2 special performances, 8 university productions and 5 readings
  • Outdoor opening ceremony and gala concert at Kolon Outdoor Music Hall in Duryu Park, 18:30 on Saturday 20 June 2026, with Korean musical stars such as Kim So-hyun, Hong Ji-min, Jung Sun-ah and Kim Ho-young
  • DIMF's own Turandot, back after seven years as the 2026 co-opening production at Palgong Hall, Daegu Culture & Arts Center, in Korean with English and Chinese subtitles
  • Overseas productions: Into the Woods (US), Barbershopera: Tony & the Guys! (UK), Les Virtuoses (France), Slapstick-Scherzo (Netherlands), Bao Yu (China) and a recording of Ghost & Lady by Japan's Shiki Theatre Company at CGV Daegu Hanil (2026)
  • 'Happiness for ₩10,000' tickets: the main DIMF shows for ₩10,000 at a festival booth (up to two per person per work in 2025)
  • Free University Musical Festival: eight university companies in 2026, including one from China, competing for a prize from the culture ministry
  • DIMF Awards and an outdoor red carpet on the closing Monday (6 July 2026 at Keimyung Art Center)

Who it suits. Best for musical-theatre fans who can plan around a particular production, book online in advance and stay a night in Daegu; casual visitors can try the outdoor opening gala, the free University Musical Festival or a ₩10,000 ticket. Less suited to visitors who need English-language shows, because most productions are in Korean and subtitles are confirmed show by show.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station or Suseo to Dongdaegu: ₩39,000 standard class from Seoul Station since the 1 September 2026 fare cut, and about 1 h 40 m–1 h 50 m (former SRT trains from Suseo have run as KTX since the merger). For the Daegu Culture & Arts Center and Kolon Outdoor Music Hall in Duryu Park, take Daegu Metro Line 1 west 12 stops to Seobu Bus Terminal Station, about 600 m from Seongdangmot pond at the park's south-west end, or change at Banwoldang to Line 2 for Duryu Station (exits 9–14), about 500 m from the park's north entrance. For Suseong Artpia, take Line 1 six stops to Myeongdeok and Line 3 seven stops to Suseongmot Station, Exit 1.

From Busan

KTX from Busan Station to Dongdaegu, then Daegu Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to Duryu Park as above.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, then the KTX to Dongdaegu and Daegu Metro to the venue as above. With a late arrival, stay overnight in Daegu.

Last leg from Duryu Station

Daegu Metro Line 2, Exits 9–14 (Duryu Park). About 500 m to the north entrance of Duryu Park; the Daegu Culture & Arts Center is in the southern part of the park, so allow extra time (walking time not published). Seobu Bus Terminal Station on Line 1 is about 600 m from the park's south-west end.

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was announced in the sources found. Venues are spread across the city, so use the metro or a taxi between them.

Getting home

Evening shows start at 19:30 on weekdays and 19:00 at weekends (Turandot 2026, 140 minutes with the interval), so they finish around 21:20–21:50. To get back to Seoul after an evening show, check the last KTX from Dongdaegu in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station before the festival day, allowing for the metro: Line 1 runs direct from Seobu Bus Terminal to Dongdaegu (12 stops). A weekend matinee at 14:00 suits a day trip.

Parking

Duryu Park has a free public car park. If the Daegu Culture & Arts Center car park is full, the organizer's ticket page directs drivers to the Duryu skating rink car park, and no refunds are given for parking or traffic problems. The metro is easier.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Booking
Each production is sold separately; DIMF posts sale dates, ticket sellers and discounts for each show on dimf.or.kr. The 2026 co-opening production Turandot was sold on NOL Ticket (the former Interpark Ticket), whose page links international users to the English NOL World site (world.nol.com); tickets were collected at the venue (no delivery) and online booking closed 3 hours before the show. The free University Musical Festival seats were reserved on Naver Booking (sales 5 and 12 June 2026, 14:00). 'Happiness for ₩10,000' tickets are sold in person: in 2024 (from 15 June) and 2025 at a booth in front of CGV Daegu Hanil on Dongseong-ro, up to two per person per work, and in 2026 at a booth at the opening-gala venue.
Foreign cards
Partly confirmed. NOL World, the English site linked from the 2026 opening production's page, accepts international Visa and Mastercard credit cards, but a May 2026 guide reports frequent 3D Secure failures and suggests asking your card issuer to allow Korean payments first (or using NOL World's prepaid card). Whether every DIMF production is listed on NOL World, and whether the ₩10,000 booth takes foreign cards, was not confirmed.
English on site
Turandot (2026) was performed in Korean with English and Chinese subtitles; other productions state their own subtitle arrangements. NOL World has English, Japanese and Chinese pages. Foreign visitors got 30% off Turandot with a passport or alien registration card (up to 4 tickets). In 2025, 175 volunteers helped with interpretation and operations.
Crowds
Most shows have seats: in 2025, 33,867 tickets were taken for 52,664 seats (64.31% occupancy), with some shows above 80%. In 2026 about 36,000 attended performances and about 160,000 took part in all. The opening gala and the awards red carpet draw queues of fans; some waited overnight for the 2024 gala.
Best time to go
The opening weekend for the outdoor gala (Saturday 20 June in 2026) and the co-opening production, or the final weekend for the closing productions and the DIMF Awards red carpet on the closing Monday. Weekend matinees at 14:00 suit a day trip from Seoul.
What to bring
Your passport (for the foreigner discount, and proof of any discount, or you pay the difference) and the booking confirmation to collect tickets at the box office; an umbrella or rain jacket for the outdoor gala; water for queues in 30°C heat. Children under 7 were not admitted to Turandot.
Rain
Theatre performances run whatever the weather. The outdoor opening gala is vulnerable to the rainy season: in 2024 heavy rain moved it indoors to Palgong Hall, and in 2025 the opening ceremony and gala were cancelled because of the weather.
Step-free access
People with disabilities got 50% off Turandot in 2026 (proof required at the venue). Wheelchair seating and step-free routes at each venue were not described in the sources found.

Questions travelers ask

When is DIMF 2027?

Not announced as of 19 October 2026. The last three editions ran 18 days from the third Friday of June to a Monday in early July (21 June–8 July 2024, 20 June–7 July 2025, 19 June–6 July 2026), which points to about 18 June–5 July 2027. In 2026 the line-up was announced in late April.

How much are DIMF tickets?

Prices are set per production and seat. In 2025 the opening-and-closing package cost ₩80,000 for VIP and ₩60,000 for R seats (list prices ₩140,000 and ₩100,000), and the organizer said in 2024 that its prices are about half those of comparable musicals. A festival booth sells 'Happiness for ₩10,000' tickets to the main shows, up to two per person per work (2025).

Can foreigners book DIMF tickets online?

For shows sold on NOL Ticket, yes: the 2026 opening production's page linked international users to the English NOL World site, which accepts international Visa and Mastercard credit cards, though a 2026 guide reports frequent 3D Secure failures. Tickets were collected at the venue, and foreigners got 30% off with a passport or alien registration card (up to 4 tickets). The free University Musical Festival used Naver Booking, which is in Korean.

Are the musicals in English?

Mostly not. DIMF's own Turandot (2026) was performed in Korean with English and Chinese subtitles. Overseas companies bring their own productions, but subtitles are stated show by show, so check each listing before you book.

What is free at DIMF?

The University Musical Festival (all seats free in 2026, reserved on Naver Booking) and the DIMF Fringe street performances; fans also gather for the outdoor red carpet before the DIMF Awards. The outdoor opening gala at Kolon Outdoor Music Hall was free for all seats in 2023; 2026 admission terms were not found.

How do I get to the Daegu Culture & Arts Center?

Take the KTX to Dongdaegu (₩39,000 standard class from Seoul Station; the late-evening trains take 1 h 39 min–1 h 52 min), then Daegu Metro to Duryu Park. Line 2's Duryu Station (exits 9–14) is about 500 m from the park's north entrance, and Line 1's Seobu Bus Terminal Station about 600 m from Seongdangmot at its south-west end; the centre is in the southern part of the park.

Can children attend?

It depends on the show. Turandot (2026) admitted only children aged 7 and over, whatever their ticket or guardian. Some years include children's musicals, such as Ttubi and the Moonlight Knights at Suseong Artpia in 2025.

What is the weather like during Daegu International Musical Festival?

June in Daegu: average high 29 °C (84 °F), low 19 °C (66 °F), 129 mm of rain (Daegu station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). July in Daegu: average high 31 °C (87 °F), low 23 °C (73 °F), 224 mm of rain (Daegu station, KMA 1991–2020 normals). What we could not confirm

  • The organizer's site (dimf.or.kr) was not opened, because no search returned it; programme facts come from KTO data via a mirror, the NOL Ticket page for Turandot and news reports.
  • 2026 list prices per production and seat were not found (only the 2025 package prices and the ₩10,000 scheme).
  • Whether every 2026 production was sold on NOL Ticket / NOL World, or some on other sellers, and whether foreign phone numbers are needed for any of them.
  • Whether the 2026 outdoor opening gala was free and how seats were allocated (the 2023 gala was free for all seats; 2024 fans queued from the day before).
  • DIMF Fringe 2026 locations, dates and times were not published in the sources found.
  • Location and hours of the 2026 ₩10,000 booth beyond 'at the opening-gala venue', and whether it takes foreign cards.
  • Subtitles for productions other than Turandot (2026) were not confirmed.
  • Walking route and time from Duryu Station or Seobu Bus Terminal Station to the Daegu Culture & Arts Center; nearest stations for Keimyung Art Center, Ayang Arts Center and Bongsan Culture Center were not sourced.
  • 2027 dates are not announced; the 18 June–5 July window is inferred from the 2024–2026 third-Friday-of-June pattern (the 2023 edition opened in May).
  • No KTO TourAPI listing (contentId) for DIMF in the site's snapshot, and the KTO mirror page gave none; KTO Japanese and Chinese names were not found. The Japanese name is from a 2020 press release for DIMF's online opening concert; 大邱國際音樂劇節 was seen only on Creatrip.
  • firstHeld is set to 2006, the pilot festival; by the edition count the first numbered edition was in 2007, which no source opened states.
  • 2024 attendance and occupancy were not found (the 2025 report says 2025 was similar).
  • One 2024 report on the indoor opening gala could be read as giving 24 June; the previews give Saturday 22 June 18:30.
  • Last KTX back from Dongdaegu to Seoul on the festival dates under the timetable in force that day.
  • Restrooms, wheelchair access at the venues and pets were not covered by the sources found.

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed last-train and last-bus clock times taken from the October 2026 timetable (next edition months away); the page now gives journey times and says to check the last train in the Korail app or at the station or terminal.
