What it is like
Suseong-gu, the district of Daegu around Suseongmot Lake, started this biennale in 2024 as a way of commissioning public architecture and landscape. The district calls it a 'building biennale' (짓는 비엔날레): instead of only showing models, it runs design competitions and invites architects to work on real places in the district, such as parks, reservoirs, the lake and unused plots. The first edition, 'Relational Fields', ran for 13 days in October 2024 at the Suseong Artpia arts centre and four new pavilions at reservoirs and a stream around the district, and drew about 5,200 visitors. Its projects included designs for a floating stage and a bridge on Suseongmot and an ecology education centre at Mangwolji.
The 2026 edition, the second, is titled 'Living Ground' and is co-directed by the architect John Hong (Seoul National University) and the landscape architect Kim Ah-yeon (University of Seoul). In 2025 about ten teams from Korea and abroad were invited to design for two sites: a 'wood-friendly city' at Jinbatgol, with Kengo Kuma, Gerard Reinmuth, Cho Nam-ho and Kim Gun-chul, and Deulan Art Park, with Topotek 1, Z+T Studio, and Cho Yong-jun and Han Hae-mi. The public face of the biennale is on Sanghwa Hill, the small park on the lakeshore, from 27 October to 22 November: the participating teams' work, the artistic directors' international studio, a children's architecture and landscape school, and entries from an open visual-art competition on what 'Living Ground' means. The opening day, Tuesday 27 October, runs 14:00–18:00 with a performance, artist talks and an expert forum. On weekends there are drop-in building games for children, such as hanok-principle and roof-tile activities and a block village, plus sign-up programmes including an ecology tour of the lake.
Entry is free and the site is a short walk from Suseongmot Station on Line 3, so it fits easily into an afternoon in Daegu, with the lakeside path to walk afterwards. The honest caveats: this is a specialist architecture event in a neighbourhood park, not a large contemporary-art show like the Gwangju or Busan biennales; the visitor information found is in Korean only; and the invited projects belong to sites elsewhere in the district, so check what is actually built and on show before you go.
Highlights
- 'Living Ground', the 2nd edition of Daegu's architecture and landscape biennale, 27 October–22 November 2026, free, co-directed by John Hong and Kim Ah-yeon
- Opening day, Tuesday 27 October, 14:00–18:00: a pre-show performance, an introduction to the theme and artists, artists' talks on their works and an expert forum, with the visual-art competition awards
- Work by invited architects and landscape architects from Korea and abroad, including Kengo Kuma, Topotek 1, Z+T Studio and Gerard Reinmuth, for a wood-friendly city at Jinbatgol and Deulan Art Park
- The artistic directors' international studio, a children's architecture and landscape school, and selected works from an international visual-art competition (youth 10–18 and general divisions)
- Weekend drop-in activities for families: hanok building principles, roof-tile stacking, tower stacking with Tubi (Suseong-gu's character) and a 'Living Village' block village
- Weekend sign-up programmes: an ecology tour of Suseongmot, a touring children's show and a meditation session
- Open until 21:00 every day, so you can finish with an evening walk on the 2,020 m path round the lake
Who it suits. Best for architecture, landscape and design enthusiasts, and for families in Daegu looking for a free weekend activity with hands-on building games for children; less suited to visitors expecting a large contemporary-art biennale, or worth a dedicated trip from Seoul only if architecture is your interest.
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Seoul Station or Suseo to Dongdaegu Station; the trains checked took about 1 h 40 min–1 h 50 min (former SRT trains from Suseo have run as KTX since the 1 September 2026 merger). At Dongdaegu take Daegu Metro Line 1 six stops west to Myeongdeok, change to Line 3 (the elevated monorail) toward Yongji and ride seven stops to Suseongmot Station. Leave by Exit 1; the lake is about 5 minutes' walk.
From Busan
KTX from Busan Station to Dongdaegu, then Daegu Metro Line 1 to Myeongdeok and Line 3 to Suseongmot Station, Exit 1, as above.
From Incheon Airport
Take AREX to Seoul Station, then the KTX to Dongdaegu and the metro (Line 1 to Myeongdeok, Line 3 to Suseongmot) as above.
Last leg from Suseongmot Station
Daegu Metro Line 3, Exit 1. About 5 minutes on foot to the lake (one travel site gives 5–12 minutes, depending on which part of the shore you head for)
Festival shuttle
No shuttle was announced. City buses including Suseong 1-1, Suseong 3-1, 204 and 814 stop near the lake.
Getting home
The biennale closes at 21:00. Dongdaegu is 13 metro stops from Suseongmot with a change at Myeongdeok, and the KTX from Dongdaegu to Seoul Station or Suseo takes about 1 h 40 min–1 h 50 min. Most of the run falls under the KTX timetable that starts on 1 November 2026, and last-train times for the biennale dates were not verified, so check the last train back in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at Dongdaegu Station before the day and leave the lake in good time. Line 3 last-train times from Suseongmot were not checked.
Parking
The Suseongmot public car park charges ₩600 for the first 30 minutes, then ₩300 per 10 minutes, up to ₩6,000 a day, between 09:00 and 20:00, and is free outside those hours (travel site, October 2025). No biennale parking arrangements were published, so the metro is easier.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
