What it is like

Namsadang nori, the show of Korea's old travelling entertainers' troupes, is on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage, and Anseong, in southern Gyeonggi Province, keeps a city company devoted to it: the Anseong Municipal Namsadang Baudeogi Pungmuldan (안성시립 남사당 바우덕이 풍물단), named after Baudeogi, whom KTO's listing describes as the first woman to become a troupe leader (kkokdusoe). About 30 full-time members and some 10 student members perform, and the troupe has played in around 30 countries. Since 2003 it has given a regular weekend show at its home stage, a round hall seating more than 700 inside Anseong Machum Land, a park in Bogae-myeon on the edge of the city.

The 2026 programme, titled 'Gombaengi Teotda' (곰뱅이텄다) and subtitled 'market-day excitement shakes Gyeongbokgung', updates the six classic acts (madang) of namsadang nori: pungmul, a drum-and-gong band led by the taepyeongso shawm and kkwaenggwari; eoreum, tightrope walking on a rope about 3 m above the floor, with jokes traded from the rope; beona, spinning bowls on sticks; salpan, tumbling and ground acrobatics; deotboegi, a mask dance; and deolmi, a satirical puppet play. KTO's listing frames it as a madang play about Baudeogi's life. Recent seasons have added LED costumes and props and a small orchestra of daegeum flute and piri oboe.

Shows run at 14:00 every Saturday and Sunday from early April to late November, about 90 minutes each. Tickets are ₩12,000 for adults, ₩6,000 for youth and ₩3,000 for children, with 50% off for Anseong residents and seniors; book on the troupe's website or buy at the hall. The format has shifted over the years: in 2016 Saturday shows were at 16:00 and adult tickets cost ₩10,000; the 2022 season ran from March to 26 November with 69 shows and 15,358 spectators; 2023's 'Baudeogi-jeon' ran from 25 March to 25 November; and the 2025 'six madang' programme ran until 30 November.

The honest caveats: there are no weekday shows and nothing from December to March; the dialogue and jokes are in Korean, with no English commentary documented; and Anseong has no railway, so from Seoul the trip is an express bus of about an hour to Anseong Terminal plus a taxi or local bus to the park. In early October the same park hosts the far bigger Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi Festival.

Highlights

  • All six namsadang acts in one show of about 90 minutes: pungmul drumming, eoreum tightrope, beona bowl spinning, salpan tumbling, deotboegi mask dance and deolmi puppetry
  • Tightrope walking on a rope about 3 m up, with jokes and patter from the rope
  • Performed by Anseong's city-run Baudeogi troupe (about 30 full-time members plus student players), named after the first woman to lead a namsadang troupe
  • Every Saturday and Sunday at 14:00 from April to November; 4 April–29 November in 2026
  • Round hall seating more than 700 inside Anseong Machum Land park, described in reports as an indoor stage
  • Tickets ₩12,000 for adults, ₩6,000 for youth and ₩3,000 for children; 50% off for Anseong residents and seniors
  • A regular weekend show every season since 2003

Who it suits. Good for travellers who want to see Korean folk performance (drumming, tightrope and acrobatics) as a complete show rather than a festival snippet, and for families, since the acts are easy to enjoy without Korean. It makes a half-day trip from Seoul by bus, but only on weekend afternoons between April and November.

Getting there

From Seoul

Express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Anseong Terminal: 37 departures a day on the weekday timetable, 06:05–23:10, scheduled at 1 h 03 min, ₩7,800 standard or ₩9,800 deluxe. Dong Seoul Terminal has 4 intercity buses a day (1 h 40 min, ₩8,100), and red express buses 4401 and 4402 run from Gangnam Station to Anseong. From Anseong Terminal take a taxi, or local bus 15-1 to the Anseong Machum Land stop, about 280 m from the park. The hall is inside Anseong Machum Land at 198-2 Namsadang-ro, Bogae-myeon. Anseong has no railway.

Last leg from Anseong Terminal (no railway in Anseong), then taxi or bus

Express buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal; intercity buses from Dong Seoul Terminal. Not walkable; take a taxi, or local bus 15-1 to the 안성맞춤랜드 stop, about 280 m from the park

Getting home

No trains: Anseong has no railway. On the weekday timetable, express buses from Anseong Terminal to Seoul Express Bus Terminal run until 22:50 (37 a day, scheduled at 1 h 25 min), so the 14:00 show, about 90 minutes long, leaves plenty of time for the trip back. Weekend times were not checked separately.

Parking

Parking at Anseong Machum Land, with accessible spaces by the Namsadang hall car park (KTO); fees not published.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Crowds

Do I need to book?

You can book on the Baudeogi troupe's website or buy tickets at the hall on the day. In 2022 the 69 shows drew 15,358 people to a hall seating more than 700, so door tickets should usually be available outside festival weekends. For questions call +82-31-678-2518.

What will I see?

The six acts of namsadang nori: pungmul drumming led by the taepyeongso shawm and kkwaenggwari gong; eoreum, tightrope walking on a rope about 3 m up with jokes from the rope; beona, bowl spinning on sticks; salpan, tumbling and ground acrobatics; deotboegi, a mask dance; and deolmi, a puppet play. None was documented. The jokes and dialogue are in Korean, but the drumming, acrobatics, bowl spinning and tightrope walking need no translation.

How do I get there from Seoul?

Is this the same as the Anseong Baudeogi Festival?

No. The weekend show is the troupe's regular paid programme from April to November. The Anseong Namsadang Baudeogi Festival is a separate four-day event with free entry in the same park and along Anseong Stream, held from 2 to 5 October in 2026.

What we could not confirm

  • The organizer's pages (anseong.go.kr tourPortal and the troupe's booking site) were not opened; the 2026 dates, time, length and prices come from KTO's listing (modified 7 April 2026) and its mirrors.
  • Age ranges for the youth and child tickets, whether the disability and military discounts listed in 2016 still apply, and whether there is any discount for foreign visitors.
  • The troupe's booking website address, whether it needs a Korean phone number, and whether tickets are still sold through NOL (Interpark) in 2026.
  • Whether seats are reserved or unreserved; two reports call the hall indoors, while KTO only describes a round hall seating more than 700.
  • Rain, heat and holiday rules: no cancellation policy was published.
  • Timetable of local bus 15-1, and whether it serves Anseong Terminal; taxi time and fare from the terminal to Anseong Machum Land were not sourced.
  • Weekend express-bus times: the timetable mirror shows the weekday schedule only.
  • Opening dates of the 2024 and 2025 seasons (2024 ran to 24 November, 2025 to 30 November); 2022 and 2023 opened in late March, 2026 on 4 April.
  • First year: KTO's overview and 2022 news say the show began in 2003, while the same KTO listing also says the troupe started it on its founding in 2002.
  • Japanese and Chinese names for this programme were not found on a KTO or official page (KTO Japanese uses 男寺党 and バウドギ for the festival).
