What it is like

The namsadang were the travelling entertainers of Joseon-era Korea: troupes of drummers, acrobats, tightrope walkers, mask dancers and puppeteers who toured the market towns, and Anseong, in southern Gyeonggi Province, was one of their bases. The festival is named after Baudeogi, a Joseon performer whom the city and KTO describe as the first woman to lead a namsadang troupe (kkokdusoe). Since 2001 Anseong has honoured her every autumn with four days of namsadang nori, a UNESCO-listed intangible heritage, in Anseong Machum Land, a large park in Bogae-myeon on the edge of the city, with a second site along Anseong Stream.

The heart of it is the classic namsadang programme of pungmul drumming, tightrope walking, bowl spinning, tumbling, mask dance and puppetry, staged across the grounds. In 2026 a double tightrope act played every day at 17:30 on the market stage, a paid theme show ran in the indoor hall each afternoon, and a morning 'World Heritage masterclass' put namsadang beside five troupes from the CIOFF folklore network, from Thailand, India, Malaysia, Egypt and Taiwan. Around the stages are a recreated Anseong old market, modelled on one of the three great markets of Joseon, a hands-on theme park where children can try tightrope walking and bowl spinning, a livestock grill zone, farm-produce stalls and evening illuminations at the waterside park. The day before opening, a memorial rite for Baudeogi, a street parade and an eve show take place in downtown Anseong.

It is a big event. The city counted about 568,000 visitors in 2024 and about 610,000 in 2025, about 190,000 of them on the opening day. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected it as a Culture and Tourism Festival for 2024, 2025 and 2026, and it is an official CIOFF festival. Foreign troupes come every year: from six countries in 2024, and in 2025 from Huzhou in China, Macau and Kamakura in Japan under the East Asia Culture City programme.

The honest caveats: Anseong has no railway, so from Seoul the trip is an express bus of about an hour and then a festival shuttle or a taxi; private cars are kept off part of the approach road and the car parks fill. Most stages are outdoors, and the comedy, MCs and tightrope patter are in Korean. In 2026 the information desk offered Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Vietnamese interpretation, but English was not mentioned. If you miss the festival, the city troupe performs the full show in the same park every weekend from April to November.

Highlights

  • Namsadang nori, a UNESCO-listed folk performance of drumming, tightrope walking, bowl spinning, tumbling, mask dance and puppetry, in the home town of the Baudeogi troupe
  • Double tightrope act (ssangjul-tagi) every day at 17:30 on the market stage in 2026
  • Visiting folk troupes: five CIOFF teams from Thailand, India, Malaysia, Egypt and Taiwan joined the daily World Heritage masterclass in 2026
  • A recreated Anseong old market, modelled on one of the three great markets of Joseon, with crafts, local food and a livestock grill zone
  • Baudeogi Theme Park hands-on zone where children try tightrope walking, bowl spinning and decorating a tightrope walker's fan
  • Free entry, 10:00–21:00 over four days in early October (2–5 October in 2026)
  • Eve-night street parade and show in downtown Anseong the day before opening (1 October in 2026)

Who it suits. Good for travellers curious about Korean folk performance and for families, since the drumming, acrobatics and tightrope walking need no Korean; it works as a day trip from Seoul by bus. Less suited to anyone who dislikes big crowds or needs guidance in English.

Getting there

From Seoul

Anseong has no railway. Take an express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Anseong Terminal (37 a day on the weekday timetable, 06:05–23:10, scheduled at 1 h 03 min, ₩7,800 standard or ₩9,800 deluxe); Dong Seoul Terminal has 4 intercity buses a day (1 h 40 min, ₩8,100), and red express buses 4401 (to Hankyong National University) and 4402 (to Anseong Terminal) run from Gangnam Station. Or take Line 1 to Pyeongtaek Station and bus 370 or 380 to Hankyong National University or Anseong Sports Complex. On festival days, shuttle buses run from Hankyong National University, Anseong Sports Complex and other points in town to the festival's east gate; otherwise take a taxi, or local bus 15-1 to the Anseong Machum Land stop, about 280 m from the park.

Last leg from Anseong Terminal (no railway in Anseong), then festival shuttle, taxi or bus

Express buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal; intercity buses from Dong Seoul Terminal. Not walkable; on festival days use the shuttles from Hankyong National University or Anseong Sports Complex, or take a taxi, or local bus 15-1 to the 안성맞춤랜드 stop, about 280 m from the park

Festival shuttle

2026: six shuttle routes to the festival's east gate, running about 09:20–22:00: Hankyong National University (09:30–22:00, 144 trips), Anseong Sports Complex (09:40–22:00, 154), an inner-city loop (10:00–22:00, 140), Gongdo-eup Administrative Welfare Centre (09:20–22:00, 96), Anseong Machum Art Hall (09:30–22:00, 24) and Bogae-myeon Administrative Welfare Centre (09:40–22:00, 24), as summarised from the city's festival portal. In 2025 the shuttles were free and ran 09:00–22:00 with 40–140 trips per route; whether they were free in 2026 was not stated.

Getting home

No trains: Anseong has no railway. On the weekday timetable the last express bus from Anseong Terminal to Seoul Express Bus Terminal leaves at 22:50 (37 a day, scheduled at 1 h 25 min). The grounds close at 21:00 and the festival shuttles run until about 22:00, so a same-day return is easy if you leave before the evening crowds; weekend and holiday bus times were not checked separately.

Parking

2026: 21 car parks with 5,265 spaces, including lots beside the grounds (the north-gate lot alone has 1,000) and park-and-ride lots in town on the shuttle routes, such as Hankyong National University (600) and Anseong Machum Art Hall (200); 50 accessible spaces. From 09:00 to 22:00 a section of the approach road from the Naebang-gyo intersection is closed to private cars and open only to shuttles, and large coaches cannot enter the grounds (in 2025 they used a coach lot at Anseong Sports Complex). Fees were not published.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
