What it is like

Wonju's dumpling story starts after the Korean War, when refugees settled around the city's central markets and made dumplings to get by, partly with flour from US aid; over time the dumpling shops formed their own alley in the market lanes. The city is now known for kimchi dumplings and for kalman, knife-cut noodles served with dumplings. Wonju City launched the festival in 2023 to bring people back to its old downtown. The first edition, two days on Culture Street, drew about 200,000 people and ran out of dumplings; the second, in 2024, ran three days on grounds about three times larger; the third, in 2025, counted about 410,000 visits (measured by the city from mobile-network data), with Wonil-ro closed to traffic for the main stage.

For 2026 the festival moves to the stream. The main stage and food zones sit in the Wonjucheon dawn-market area, linked on foot to Culture Street and the Jungang-dong markets (Jungang, Jayu, Doraemi and Miro), partly to cut the road closures that inconvenienced residents. The core is the Wonju Mandu Zone: 15 local makers chosen from 32 teams at a tasting on 8 September, judged on quality, price and hygiene. Around it are a global dumpling zone, hand-made dumplings in the market, a dumpling-making experience, a fast-wrapping contest, dumpling-tower stacking, a flea market and an arts zone. Opening night, Friday 23 October, brings a nakhwa-nori fire-drop show over the stream carrying citizens' written wishes; free concerts run on all three days, and chef Jung Ji-sun, known in Korea as the queen of dim sum, gives a live cooking show on Sunday 25 October. The Wonju International Walking Festival is held the same weekend (24–25 October), and in 2025 the two events were promoted together.

The honest caveats: queues are the main complaint. In 2025 popular booths had more than 100 people waiting for over an hour, which is why 2026 adds QR web ordering and kiosks. The organizer publishes its schedule, menus, prices, parking and shuttle details only as images on a Korean-only website. Wonju Station, where the KTX-Eum trains stop, is not in the old downtown, which is why the city runs a shuttle from it; about 1,980 parking spaces are planned near the grounds, but expect them to fill.

Highlights

  • Wonju Mandu Zone: 15 local dumpling makers chosen from 32 teams at a tasting on 8 September 2026, plus a global dumpling zone and hand-made dumplings in the traditional market
  • Nakhwa-nori fire-drop show over the Wonjucheon stream on opening night, Friday 23 October 2026, carrying wishes written by citizens
  • Free concerts on the main stage in the Wonjucheon dawn-market area: Kim Yeon-ja and Seodo Band (23 Oct), Crying Nut, AUX and DJ Two Face (24 Oct), Kim Yong-bin and Harmonize (25 Oct)
  • Live cooking show by festival ambassador chef Jung Ji-sun, the 'queen of dim sum', on Sunday 25 October 2026
  • Hands-on dumpling making and steaming, a fast-wrapping contest and a dumpling-tower stacking contest
  • Market tie-ins across the Jungang-dong traditional markets: Mandu Road, a stamp tour, receipt rewards and a market tour group
  • QR web ordering and kiosks, new in 2026, to shorten the hour-long queues of 2025

Who it suits. Best for food-focused travellers and families who want a day trip from Seoul that combines street food with Wonju's old markets; less suited to anyone who dislikes queues and crowds (about 410,000 visits in 2025) or who needs English-language information, which the organizer does not publish.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX-Eum trains on the Jungang Line from Cheongnyangni stop at Wonju Station, about 140 km east of Seoul; ITX-Maeum trains run on the same line. The station is not in the old downtown, so take one of the three 2026 festival shuttle routes (one starts at Wonju Station), a taxi or a city bus to the Wonjucheon and Jungang-dong market area. Express and intercity buses also run from Seoul to Wonju. Journey times and fares were not verified for this record; check Korail (korail.com) and book the train in advance for the weekend.

Last leg from Wonju Station

Korail Jungang Line (KTX-Eum). Not within walking distance of the festival; take the festival shuttle from Wonju Station (2026), a taxi or a city bus

Festival shuttle

Three shuttle routes in 2026 link Wonju City Hall, Wonju Station and the Dancing performance hall (댄싱공연장) with the festival grounds; stops and times are published only as an image on the official site (셔틀버스안내 page). The 2025 shuttles were free; whether the 2026 shuttles are free, and when the last one runs, was not stated in text, so check the official site before relying on a late shuttle.

Getting home

The festival closes at 21:00. Train and bus times back to Seoul were not verified for this record: check the last KTX-Eum from Wonju Station in the Korail app (코레일톡) or at the station before you go, and allow time for the shuttle or a taxi from the old downtown to the station (2026 shuttle times are published only as an image on the official site).

Parking

About 1,980 spaces in public and temporary car parks near the grounds (2026 plan); locations and fees are on an image map on the official site. In 2025 Wonil-ro was closed to traffic and city buses were diverted; the 2026 layout moved to the stream partly to reduce road closures.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
