What it is like
Seonyudo is a small island in the Han River between Yanghwa Bridge and the south bank. It was once a hill called Seonyubong, the "peak where immortals played", that was cut away during the 20th century; from 1978 to 2000 a water treatment plant on the island supplied tap water to south-western Seoul. In 2002 the plant reopened as Seonyudo Park, designed by the landscape architect Jung Young-sun, who kept the concrete tanks and columns and let gardens grow over them. Korean sources describe it as the country's first park made by regenerating an industrial site. The park is free and open 06:00–24:00 every day.
Yeongdeungpo-gu District and the Yeongdeungpo Culture Foundation started the Seonyudo Garden Festival (선유도원축제) in autumn 2024 to bring the arts into the park. The 2025 edition ran for three days, 24–26 October, with a main stage for classical music, ballet and fusion gugak (Geum Nan-sae and the New World Chamber Orchestra, Seoul City Ballet and the band Ondo), a guided bird walk, Seonyu Yoga, the Yeongdeungpo flea market, a book festival with author talks, climate and charity campaigns, and a street-arts building workshop run with the Korea Street Arts Association.
For 2026 the Korea Tourism Organization lists two days, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, 12:00–20:00. Its programme summary names the Seonyudo bird walk (선유도 새산책), which looks at the park's habitats and birds, outdoor yoga for families and couples, and a street-arts festival of teams chosen through an open call. Alongside it runs Siwol-ui Seonyu ("Seonyu in October"), a resident-organised street festival with a flea market and stage programmes on the car-free walking street that leads from Seonyudo Station towards the river; it reached its ninth edition in 2025.
The honest caveats: the 2026 dates and hours come from the Korea Tourism Organization's listing (updated 15 October 2026); the organizer's own festival page and a detailed 2026 timetable could not be checked. Programme times, and which activities are paid or need sign-up, were not published. The island has no public car park, so come by subway, and expect to walk about 10 minutes from Seonyudo Station and over the Seonyu pedestrian bridge.
Highlights
- A free festival on a Han River island park built on a water treatment plant that ran from 1978 to 2000 and reopened as a garden park in 2002
- 2026 programme (KTO): the Seonyudo bird walk through the park's habitats, outdoor yoga for families and couples, and street-arts shows by teams chosen through an open call
- Siwol-ui Seonyu: a resident-run flea market and stage programmes on the car-free walking street by Seonyudo Station (in 2025, about 300 m of street from Exits 2 and 3)
- 2025 line-up for a sense of scale: Geum Nan-sae and the New World Chamber Orchestra, Seoul City Ballet, fusion gugak band Ondo, a book festival with author talks, and climate and charity campaigns
- The Seonyu Bridge, the only pedestrian-only bridge across the Han River, lit after dark
- Concrete water tanks and columns overgrown with gardens, and autumn colour in late October
Who it suits. Best for families, couples and anyone staying in western Seoul (Hongdae, Hapjeong, Yeouido) who want a relaxed, free afternoon of music, yoga and a flea market in an unusual riverside park; less suited to travellers looking for a big headline festival, or anyone who needs to drive, since the island has no public parking.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
