What it is like
On the summit of Namsan, a few steps from N Seoul Tower, stands the Mongmyeoksan beacon mound (Mongmyeoksan is the old name of Namsan). Built in 1423, it was the end point of the Joseon kingdom's chain of beacon stations: smoke by day and fire by night carried news from the borders to the capital, and the number of beacons lit told the court how serious it was, from one in peacetime to five when fighting had broken out at the border. The signals stopped in 1895, and the mound seen today was restored in 1993. Since 21 November 2006 the Seoul Metropolitan Government has re-enacted the noon signal, together with a noon bell-ringing at Bosingak in Jongno.
The ceremony runs from 11:00 to 12:10, Tuesday to Sunday. Beacon soldiers in Joseon costume open with a guard ritual, prepare and light the beacon at noon, and close with a second guard ritual; a 2023 city report also describes a patrol around the mound and a tally-matching ritual in which newly arrived soldiers prove who they are. As it is peacetime, only one column of smoke goes up. When the re-enactment began in 2006 the city chose a smoke generator over real fuel so that the wind could not start a fire, and put the traditional materials on display instead. KTO says the ceremony comes with a historical commentary.
In the afternoon the same programme puts on a 40-minute show on Palgakjeong Plaza beside the tower, from 15:00 to 15:40: samulnori percussion, then a demonstration of Joseon martial arts from the Muyedobotongji manual with swords, glaives and long spears, which in 2023 ended with a live-blade cutting display. From April to October, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, visitors can book a free beacon soldier for a day experience that takes part in the 11:00–12:10 ceremony. The programme also runs the noon bell-ringing at Bosingak in Jongno, where members of the public strike the bell 12 times and Tuesdays have an on-site session for foreign visitors.
The honest caveats: this is a small, short re-enactment rather than a big show, and the moment to catch is the lighting at noon. It is not held on Mondays or on Seollal and Chuseok days, it can be called off in rain or bad weather, and some listings warn that it may also be cancelled on other public holidays, so check the notices on the official site first. KTO's listing gives the address of Bosingak in Jongno because it bundles both ceremonies; for the beacon ceremony, go to the top of Namsan, about 30 minutes away. The Bosingak bell-ringing itself was suspended for maintenance until 31 January 2026.
Highlights
- The beacon lit at noon by costumed beacon soldiers, Tuesday to Sunday, in a ceremony from 11:00 to 12:10 on the summit of Namsan beside N Seoul Tower
- A real Joseon site: the Mongmyeoksan beacon mound, built in 1423 as the end point of the kingdom's beacon network and restored in 1993; the re-enactment has run since 21 November 2006
- Guard ritual, preparation, lighting and a second guard ritual; one column of smoke for peacetime, from a code that ran up to five beacons for battle at the border
- Samulnori and Joseon martial arts from the Muyedobotongji manual on Palgakjeong Plaza, 15:00–15:40, Tuesday to Sunday
- Beacon soldier for a day: a free, booked hands-on role in the ceremony, April to October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, 11:00–12:10
- Run by the same programme: the noon bell-ringing at Bosingak in Jongno, struck 12 times by members of the public, with an on-site session for foreign visitors on Tuesdays
- Free to watch, with no booking needed
Who it suits. Best for first-time visitors who are going up Namsan to N Seoul Tower anyway and want a short, free slice of Joseon history at noon, and for families with children who like costumes and signal fires; less suited to anyone expecting a large spectacle (it is a small re-enactment with a single column of smoke) or visiting on a Monday.
Getting there
From Seoul
Take Line 3 or 4 to Chungmuro Station and board the 01A or 01B Namsan bus at Exit 2, or take Line 3 to Dongguk University Station and board at Exit 6; get off at N Seoul Tower, about 10–15 minutes up, and the beacon mound is beside the tower and the Palgakjeong pavilion. Both buses start at the Namsan Yejang bus transfer car park under Namsan Yejang Park, about 5 minutes on foot from Myeongdong Station (Line 4) Exit 1; 01B is the shorter, faster route to the tower, and the buses take transit cards only, not cash. Alternatively walk from Myeongdong to the Namsan cable car lower station at 83 Sopa-ro and ride up; a 2026 travel guide lists ₩15,000 return and ₩12,000 one way, 10:00–23:00. Walking up from Myeongdong on the park paths is possible, but no official walking time was found.
From Busan
KTX from Busan Station to Seoul Station, about 2 h 30 min (standard fare ₩54,400 since 1 September 2026), then Line 4 to Chungmuro Station, Exit 2, and the 01A or 01B Namsan bus to N Seoul Tower.
From Incheon Airport
AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 4 to Chungmuro Station, Exit 2, and the 01A or 01B Namsan bus to N Seoul Tower.
Last leg from Chungmuro Station
Seoul Subway Lines 3 and 4, Exit 2. Ride rather than walk: the 01A or 01B Namsan bus from Exit 2 takes about 10–15 minutes to the N Seoul Tower stop, next to the beacon mound
Festival shuttle
No dedicated shuttle. The 01A and 01B Namsan buses (Haechi buses) serve the summit from the Namsan Yejang bus transfer car park, Chungmuro Station Exit 2 and Dongguk University Station Exit 6; get off at N Seoul Tower. 01B is the shorter route to the tower and also stops at the Namsan cable car; transfers between 01A and 01B are allowed, and you pay by transit card only. Frequency and fare were not published in the sources found.
Getting home
Not a concern: the programme is over by 15:40, and the cable car runs until 23:00 (2026 travel guide) if you stay on the summit into the evening.
Parking
No parking for the programme; Visit Seoul asks visitors to come by public transport.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Questions travelers ask
What time is the Namsan beacon fire ceremony?
Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 12:10, with the beacon lit at noon. A samulnori and traditional martial-arts show follows on Palgakjeong Plaza beside N Seoul Tower from 15:00 to 15:40. No separate summer or winter times were published.
How long does it last?
The ceremony takes about 70 minutes, from 11:00 to 12:10, but the key moment is the lighting at noon, so arriving shortly before 12:00 is enough to see it. The afternoon show lasts 40 minutes.
Is it free?
Yes. Watching the ceremony and the afternoon show is free with no booking. The beacon soldier for a day experience is free too, but has to be booked on namsanbongsu.kr. Getting up the hill costs a bus fare or a cable car ticket.
Where exactly is it, and where should I stand?
On the summit of Namsan, at the beacon mound beside N Seoul Tower and the Palgakjeong pavilion, not at the Jongno address in KTO's listing (that is Bosingak, where the same programme rings a bell at noon). Watch from around the mound and get there a little before noon for a clear view of the lighting; a 2023 city report says visitors could step up to the mound after the ceremony.
What happens if it rains?
It can be cancelled in rain or bad weather, and the booked beacon soldier experience is cancelled if it rains on the day. The organizer posts notices on namsanbongsu.kr, so check before you go up.
Which days is it not held?
Mondays, and the days of Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok. Listings also warn that it may be cancelled on other public holidays, so check the official site if your visit falls on one.
Can visitors take part?
Yes, by booking the free beacon soldier for a day experience, which joins the 11:00–12:10 ceremony on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from April to October; KTO says applications open on the 1st of the month before. At Bosingak, Tuesdays have an on-site bell-ringing session for foreign visitors.
How do I get to the beacon mound?
Take the 01A or 01B Namsan bus from Chungmuro Station Exit 2 or Dongguk University Station Exit 6 to the N Seoul Tower stop, about 10–15 minutes, or the Namsan cable car from near Myeongdong. Pay the bus by transit card, as it takes no cash.

What we could not confirm
- The organizer's site namsanbongsu.kr could not be opened (no search returned it); 2026 times come from KTO's listing (updated 27 Jan 2026), a 2026 event listing and Visit Seoul's 2025 page, which agree
- Whether the ceremony runs on public holidays other than Seollal and Chuseok (a 2026 listing names only those two days; Visit Seoul says it may be cancelled on public holidays; a 2022 city report says it is not held on public holidays)
- Whether there is any summer heat pause or winter change of times; none was found, and the city's August 2026 heat-warning cancellations did not name the ceremony
- Whether the patrol and tally-matching rituals described in 2023 are still part of the Namsan sequence (the 2026 listing gives only the guard rituals and the lighting)
- Whether the Bosingak bell-ringing resumed after its maintenance suspension to 31 January 2026
- 2026 booking details for the beacon soldier experience: places per session, age limits, whether foreigners can book, and whether Eventus is still used
- Language of the historical commentary at the ceremony
- Namsan bus fare and frequency, and the current Namsan cable car fares (the only fares found are in a 2026 travel guide whose title says 2024 prices)
- An official walking time from Myeongdong or Chungmuro to the summit
- Official Japanese and Chinese names not found
- Coordinates are approximate, placed at the beacon mound beside N Seoul Tower
