What it is like
Namhansanseong is a mountain fortress on the hills about 25 km southeast of central Seoul, built in the early 17th century as an emergency capital for the Joseon kings. In the winter of 1636, when a Qing army invaded, King Injo held out here for 47 days. Its walls run for more than 7.5 km on the main circuit and about 12 km with the outer works, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Inside the walls are the Haenggung, a temporary palace built in 1626, the Sueojangdae command post, and a village of restaurants and tea houses.
Every autumn since at least 2023, Gyeonggi Province's Namhansanseong World Heritage Center has run a season of free activities around the palace and walls under the banner "fortress city in the forest": 19 August–5 November 2023, 1 September–27 October 2024 and 5 September–2 November 2025. In 2026 it was renamed the Autumn Festa and runs 5 September–25 October in four strands. Traditional culture experiences (from 5 September) include a one-day craft class at the Haenggung, a Sueojangdae guardian experience at the command post, and tea with a history talk at Oehaengjeon. An eco-history camp (from 3 October) offers a history tour, an ecology tour along the fortress trail and eco-friendly activities at the Haenggung. The Namhansanseong Yeonhui Hanmadang (from 24 September) puts on family theatre, folk performance (yeonhui), and traditional music and fusion-band shows in the Inhwagwan courtyard. A Chuseok special on 24–27 September added a Haenggung concert with Ensemble Deoryu, Nam Sang-il, Project Rock and Kim Duk-soo, and a moonlight walk under night lighting. The Center also runs a separate spring programme (25 April–22 June in 2025).
Everything is free. Craft, culture and eco activities are walk-in on weekends and public holidays; the tours and the family theatre are booked in advance. Only the Haenggung has a gate fee, ₩2,000 for adults, and it is free for Gyeonggi-do residents, children 6 and under, people 65 and over and anyone wearing hanbok. The palace closes on Mondays.
The honest caveats: this is a set of small, Korean-language activities spread around a hilltop fortress, not a festival ground with stalls and a main stage; daily timetables are published only on the programme's own page and by phone; weekend parking at the fortress can take over an hour, so come by bus; and in 2024 and 2025 programmes could be cancelled in rain.
Highlights
- Free hands-on heritage programmes at Namhansanseong, a UNESCO World Heritage fortress (inscribed 2014), on weekends and public holidays, 5 September–25 October 2026
- Sueojangdae guardian experience at the fortress's command post, a one-day traditional craft class at the Haenggung palace, and tea with a history talk at Oehaengjeon
- Namhansanseong Yeonhui Hanmadang in the Inhwagwan courtyard (24 September–25 October 2026): family experience theatre, folk performance, and traditional music and fusion-band shows
- Eco-history camp from 3 October 2026: a history tour and a fortress-trail ecology tour (both booked in advance) and walk-in eco-friendly activities at the Haenggung
- Chuseok special, 24–27 September 2026: Haenggung concert with Ensemble Deoryu, Nam Sang-il, Project Rock and Kim Duk-soo, plus a moonlight walk under night lighting
- Namhansanseong Haenggung, the 1626 temporary palace where King Injo held out for 47 days in 1636 (₩2,000 adults; closed Mondays)
Who it suits. Best for families with children and heritage lovers who want a free, low-key day of crafts, short tours and traditional music combined with a walk on the fortress walls just outside Seoul; less suited to visitors who need English, or who expect one festival ground with food stalls and big-stage shows.
Getting there
From Seoul
Seoul Subway Line 8 to Sanseong Station (change from Line 2 at Jamsil), Exit 2. Walk about 100 m to the bus stop and take bus 9 (about 21 minutes) or the less frequent 9-1 or 52 (about 11 minutes) to the Namhansanseong Provincial Park stop at the top; a taxi takes about 11 minutes. The Haenggung and the roundabout where the walking trails start are a short walk from the stop. Alternatively, from Namhansanseong Station (also Line 8), Exit 1, walk about 310 m to the bus 9 stop; the ride takes about 24 minutes.
Last leg from Sanseong Station
Seoul Subway Line 8, Exit 2. Not walkable; about 100 m to the bus stop, then bus 9 (about 21 minutes) or 9-1 or 52 (about 11 minutes) to the Namhansanseong Provincial Park stop
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle was announced in the sources opened. City buses 9, 9-1 and 52 run from Sanseong Station to the Namhansanseong Provincial Park terminus.
Getting home
Programmes run in the daytime (10:00–16:00 in 2024 and 2025) and the Haenggung closes at 18:00, long before the last Line 8 trains. Last bus times from the fortress down to Sanseong Station were not found; a taxi takes about 11 minutes.
Parking
The South Gate (Nammun) car park is the closest to the fortress; the fee is paid on exit (rates not published in the sources opened), with exemptions or discounts for low-emission cars and multi-child families. At weekends it can take more than an hour to get a space, so the bus is the better choice.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

What we could not confirm
- Daily times and the booking channel for 2026: the programme's Notion page listed by KTO (lavender-alibi-20b.notion.site) could not be opened from here, and KTO says only that times vary by programme.
- Which days the booked tours and family theatre run in 2026 (the walk-in experiences are on weekends and public holidays) and the exact period of the AR/VR experiences.
- Whether Haenggung-based programmes need the ₩2,000 Haenggung ticket in 2026, as the tea programme did in 2024.
- Bus frequencies and last bus times between the fortress and Sanseong Station (the route pages list no timetable; travel times come from a travel blog).
- South Gate car park rates were not published in the sources opened.
- Rain policy for 2026 (programmes could be cancelled in rain in 2024 and 2025).
- No official English, Japanese or Chinese name was found; the English name is our rendering.
- First year held: the autumn programme is traced back to 2023; KTO also lists a 2022 World Heritage programme at the fortress, and earlier years were not checked.
- Haenggung free-entry rules (Gyeonggi-do residents, hanbok wearers) come from a 2025 family listing and a travel guide, not from the Center's own page.
- West Gate viewpoint: trail lighting after dark not checked; the 25-minute walk comes from a June 2026 news feature, not an official page.
