What it is like
Unjusa lies in a narrow valley in Doam-myeon, in the south-west of Hwasun County, less than 40 km from Gwangju, and it looks like no other Korean temple. Instead of one or two pagodas in front of the main hall, stone pagodas and simply carved stone Buddhas stand all along the valley floor and on the slopes either side. Legend speaks of a thousand of each. A 1942 count found 30 pagodas and 213 Buddhas; about 21 pagodas and somewhere between 80 and 94 Buddhas remain today. On the ridge above lie two reclining Buddhas, each about 12 m long, the subject of the temple's best-known legend. Three of the stone monuments are national Treasures, the temple is a site of the Mudeungsan UNESCO Global Geopark, and its pagodas were placed on Korea's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage in 2017.
The festival is Hwasun County's weekend celebration in and around the temple. KTO's listing, last updated by the county on 1 September 2026, gives 7–8 November 2026, 10:00–17:00, with free entry. Visitors can take part in a temple bell-ringing event, and pungmul (farmers' band music) and music of several genres fill the grounds; the 2026 programme also includes the unveiling of a Buddha statue. A local market called Gamtan Jangteo ("Low and Less") runs alongside hands-on corners: vegetable-based temple food, photo printing for social-media posts, painting pictures and writing wishes on roof tiles that are then displayed in the courtyard of the main hall, and woodwork such as small wooden houses with the Hwasun Wood Culture Experience Centre. Doam-myeon residents take part too: the local history and culture preservation society and the Doam women's association perform the field songs of Dojang-ri village. Participatory missions send visitors around the temple grounds.
The event has roots: KTO first listed it in 2011, and in 2002 Hwasun held an Unju Grand Festival (31 October–3 November) that paired dolmen events with stone carving and clay pagoda-making on the Unjusa lawn. But no report of a 2023, 2024 or 2025 edition was found.
The honest caveats: the dates and programme rest on KTO's listing alone, with no organizer notice or news story found by 19 October 2026; there is no festival website; buses from Gwangju take well over an hour and return times from the temple were not published; and no English-language information was found.

Who it suits. Best for travellers drawn to Korean Buddhist sites and village folk culture who want a quiet, free weekend day at one of the country's most unusual temples, and for families who enjoy simple crafts; less suited to anyone after big-stage entertainment or English-language programmes, or to travellers without a car who need a dependable bus back (return times from the temple were not published).
Getting there
From Seoul
KTX from Yongsan (or Suseo) to Gwangju Songjeong, about 2 hours (₩42,000 standard class from Yongsan after the September 2026 fare cut). In Gwangju, Hwasun bus 218 runs from Gwangju U-Square bus terminal via Namgwangju Station and Sotae Station (Gwangju Metro Line 1) through Hwasun to Doam-myeon, and several of its route variants stop at a stop named Unjusa (운주사); from Gwangju Songjeong, take Line 1 to Sotae or go to U-Square to board it. Guides put the bus ride from Gwangju at about 1 h 20 m–1 h 30 m. Bus 318 from U-Square also reaches the temple gate but runs infrequently. A taxi is the quicker last leg: by road the temple is about 39 minutes (26 km) from Hyodeok junction in southern Gwangju.
From Busan
There is no direct bus from Busan to Hwasun, so change at Gwangju. Intercity buses leave Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal (Sasang, next to Line 2 Sasang Station) for Gwangju U-Square 23 times a day, taking 2 h 57 m (₩28,300 deluxe, ₩36,800 premium); 16 a day also leave Busan Central Bus Terminal (Nopo), taking 3 h 03 m. From U-Square take Hwasun bus 218 towards Doam and the Unjusa stop, or a taxi. The festival closes at 17:00, so leave Busan early.
Last leg from Sotae Station (Gwangju Metro Line 1), then bus 218
Gwangju Metro Line 1. Not walkable; Hwasun bus 218 (the variants that run to Doam-myeon stop at Unjusa) from Sotae Station or Gwangju U-Square, or a taxi.
Festival shuttle
No festival shuttle had been announced on the pages opened; KTO's listing gives no transport details.
Getting home
The festival closes at 17:00. Bus times from the Unjusa stop were not verified: in October 2025 a visitor found the timetable posted for bus 318 out of date, with a long wait for the next bus, and suggested walking 10–15 minutes to the main road, where bus 218 runs more often. Back to Seoul, the KTX from Gwangju Songjeong takes about 2 hours, and express buses also run from Gwangju U-Square to Seoul Central City. A new KTX timetable starts on 1 November, so check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+) or at the station, and the last bus at the terminal, before the festival day.
Parking
Festival parking arrangements and charges were not published on the pages opened. By car, Unjusa is about 39 minutes (26 km) from Hyodeok junction in southern Gwangju via Chilgujae tunnel and Dogok, or about 33 minutes (19 km) from Nampyeong in Naju.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
A free county-run museum and gallery on Unjusa's approach road, with permanent displays on the history and culture of the temple and its valley, special exhibitions and hands-on programmes. From November it opens 10:00–17:00 (closed Mondays, so open on the festival weekend), the same hours as the festival: drop in on the way to or from the temple rather than at the end of the day. Tip: it is a warm indoor stop if the November afternoon in the valley turns cold.
Getting there: About 900 m from the temple along the same road (Cheontae-ro); about 15 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride
- 1913 Songjeong Station Market (1913송정역시장)After
A market that has traded beside Songjeong Station since 1913, revived in 2016 with young traders' food stalls (hotteok, fish cakes, croquettes, egg rice) and a noodle shop, across the road from Gwangju Songjeong Station and its KTX to Seoul. Open 11:00–23:00 Friday to Sunday (closed the 2nd and 4th Mondays), it is still open when you get back from Unjusa after the 17:00 close. Tip: book the KTX first and check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+), then eat with the platform minutes away.
Getting there: Bus 218 from Unjusa to Sotae Station, then Gwangju Metro Line 1 to Gwangju Songjeong Station; the market is across the road from the station
- Getting awayAfter
Buses from the Unjusa stop are few and their times were not verified: in October 2025 a visitor found the posted bus 318 timetable out of date and walked 10–15 minutes to the main road, where bus 218 runs more often. Allow about 1 h 20 m–1 h 30 m to Gwangju, or take a taxi, and book the KTX back to Seoul in advance.
Questions travelers ask
When is the Hwasun Unju Culture Festival 2026?
Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026, 10:00–17:00, in and around Unjusa Temple in Doam-myeon, Hwasun, according to KTO's listing (updated 1 September 2026).
Is it free?
Yes. KTO lists the festival as free. Entry to Unjusa Temple itself was free according to a May 2026 travel article, though older guidebooks give ₩2,500 for adults.
What happens at the festival?
A temple bell-ringing event, pungmul and music performances, the unveiling of a Buddha statue, the Gamtan Jangteo ("Low and Less") market, vegetable-based temple food, roof-tile painting and wish-writing, woodwork, and the field songs of Dojang-ri village sung by local residents.
How do I get there from Seoul?
KTX from Yongsan or Suseo to Gwangju Songjeong (about 2 hours, ₩42,000 from Yongsan), then Hwasun bus 218 from Gwangju U-Square or Sotae Station (Line 1) to the Unjusa stop; guides put the bus at about 1 h 20 m–1 h 30 m. A taxi from southern Gwangju takes about 39 minutes.
What makes Unjusa special?
Stone pagodas and rough-carved Buddhas fill a whole valley instead of standing in a single courtyard: about 21 pagodas and 80–94 Buddhas remain, plus two reclining Buddhas about 12 m long on the ridge. Three monuments are national Treasures, and the pagodas went on Korea's UNESCO World Heritage tentative list in 2017.
Can I combine it with the Hwasun Dolmen Autumn Flower Festival?
Not on the same trip in 2026: the dolmen festival runs 16–25 October 2026, two weeks earlier. The UNESCO World Heritage dolmen site is about 8 km from Unjusa and free to visit outside the festival.
When is the 2027 festival?
Not announced as of 19 October 2026. With only the 2026 edition and a 2002 predecessor on record, there is no firm pattern; late October to early November is the likeliest window if it returns.

What we could not confirm
- The 2026 dates, hours and programme come only from KTO's TourAPI listing (county-supplied, modified 1 Sep 2026) and sites that copy it; no Hwasun County or Culture and Tourism Foundation notice and no news report confirming the 2026 edition was found.
- No 2023–2025 editions were found: the edition number, the first year under the current name and whether the festival ran regularly between 2002 and 2026 are unknown, so firstHeld is left null.
- Performance line-up and times, the times of the bell-ringing event and the Buddha statue unveiling, and which statue is being unveiled were not published.
- Whether the hands-on sessions (temple food, woodwork) need sign-up or charge for materials was not published.
- Bus 218 and 318 timetables to and from the Unjusa stop were not verified (route data has no times); journey times from Gwangju differ between guides (about 1 h 20 m–1 h 30 m) and a 2025 visitor report (about 40 minutes on bus 318).

- Unjusa's own admission (free per a 2026 travel article, ₩2,500 in an older guide) and opening hours (09:00–18:00 or 08:00–18:00 in different guides) need confirming; counts of surviving Buddhas also differ (about 80 or 94).
- No KTO or official Japanese or Chinese name for the festival was found; the names were left null.
- KTO pages now label the province 전남광주통합특별시 (Jeonnam-Gwangju integrated special city); the record keeps Jeollanam-do pending confirmation of the administrative change.
