What it is like

Named after a folk song associated with Cheonan's historic Samgeori crossroads, the festival took its current name in 2003 and now draws close to a million visits over five days. It is run by the Cheonan Foundation for Arts and Culture and everything is free. The core is competitive: an International Dance Competition (25 teams from 24 countries in 2026), a National Dance Competition with a Heungtaryeong folk category, and the CIDC International Street Dance Championship, whose breaking winners qualify for world finals. In 2026 the festival was split across two sites: Cheonan Stadium hosted the opening ceremony, the big competitions, an EDM night and the closing ceremony with a drone show, while Cheonan Samgeori Park (3–5 October) took the traditional performances, a silent-headphone DJ party, family programmes and a walking outdoor version of the local legend Neungso-jeon. The signature street parade ran through Sinbu-dong in the city centre at 19:00 on 2 October, and a new overseas-team parade took 600 dancers around the park trail. Caveats: the two sites are several kilometres apart and depend on shuttle buses, almost all commentary is in Korean, and 2026 drew criticism for some sexually suggestive acts and poorly targeted promotion that the city says it will fix. Attendance is very high on the Saturday; weekday daytime sessions at the stadium are the calmest way to watch the competitions.

Highlights

  • Street dance parade on 2 October 2026 at 19:00 along a 550 m route in Sinbu-dong with Korean and overseas troupes
  • International Dance Competition with 25 teams from 24 countries across five continents
  • CIDC International Street Dance Championship (16 countries) including a six-on-six continental team battle
  • Overseas-team parade of about 600 dancers from 23 countries along the 600 m Samgeori Park trail
  • Closing ceremony, awards and drone show at Cheonan Stadium on the final night
  • Random Play Dance sessions and a silent-headphone DJ party open to anyone

Who it suits. Best for people who like competitive dance, K-pop cover and street dance, and for families (it is free and close to Seoul). Less suited to travellers wanting traditional Korean culture only, since most stages feature contemporary, ballroom or street styles, or to anyone who dislikes big crowds on the Saturday.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Cheonan-Asan Station (about 40 min, ₩12,800, 44–45 trains a day), or ITX-Saemaeul/Mugunghwa from Seoul Station to Cheonan Station (1 h–1 h 18 m, ₩9,300/₩6,300, about 26 a day), or Seoul Metro Line 1 all the way to Cheonan Station. From either station take a city bus or taxi to the '종합운동장' stop (routes 830, 840, 860 and 990 stop 121 m from the stadium).

From Busan

KTX on the Gyeongbu line from Busan to Cheonan-Asan Station, then a city bus or taxi to Cheonan Stadium.

Last leg from Cheonan Station

Seoul Metro Line 1 / Gyeongbu Line (ITX, Mugunghwa). Not within walking distance of the stadium; take a city bus to the 종합운동장 stop (routes 830, 840, 860, 990, 121 m from the stadium) or a taxi.

Festival shuttle

2026: the Cheonan Foundation ran circular shuttle buses between Cheonan Stadium and Samgeori Park; a blog reported 15 shuttles at 15-minute intervals from temporary car parks (including Cheonan Museum) to Samgeori Park. First/last times were not published.

Getting home

Cheonan has frequent evening trains to Seoul (about 26 ITX/Mugunghwa a day plus Line 1 subway); the exact last departures on festival nights were not verified, and the stadium's closing programme ends around 22:00.

Parking

Temporary car parks with shuttles in 2026. Samgeori Park public lot (about 320 spaces) has charged since 18 May 2026: first 2 hours free, then ₩400 per 10 minutes, ₩500 per 10 minutes after 3 hours, ₩5,000 daily cap, free 21:00–09:00.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
