What it is like

Yesan has grown apples since 1923, when the first orchard was planted in Godeok-myeon, and sells them as "hwangto" (red-clay) apples, crediting the soil, water from Yedang Reservoir and wide day-night temperature swings. In 2023, the 100th year of apple growing, 972 households farmed apples on 1,042 hectares, and Fuji (busa) is the main late-autumn variety. The county's apple festival, long billed as the Yesan Hwangto Apple Festival, is a harvest fair where growers sell direct, with games and stage shows around it.

The festival moves around. The 19th edition, 28–30 October 2022, filled the Yeokjeon Market car park in Yesan-eup and was the first fully in-person edition in three years, after COVID-19 and fruit-tree disease disruptions; more than 10,000 people came on the opening day. In November 2023 it was held around the Yesan Stadium complex to mark the centenary of apple growing, and in 2025 the 22nd edition shared dates and streets with the Yesan Market Samguk Festival (23–26 October) in the town centre.

The 23rd edition, on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 2026, is run by the Yedang Apple Horticultural Cooperative at the Yedangho suspension bridge, under the theme "A sweet day at Yedangho". The centrepiece is the Yesan Apple Sale Festa, where growers and the cooperative sell apples at discounted prices on the two festival days only. Around it are apple desserts and products from local makers, games and quizzes run by costumed performers, group apple games, apple wine, performances mixing jazz, gugak and classical music, and fireworks over the reservoir. KTO and the ministry note that the programme may change, and no timetable had been published by 18 October.

The venue is a destination in itself: the 402 m bridge, which KTO bills as the country's largest, opened in April 2019, is free to cross and passed 10 million visitors in June 2026. A music fountain, a paid monorail, a sculpture park and an observation tower sit beside it on the shore of Yedang Reservoir, whose shoreline runs about 40 km. Note that this is a different event from the Yesan Market Samguk Festival, which is in the town centre a week earlier (22–25 October 2026). Yesan has no KTX, but trains and buses from Seoul take under two hours, then it is about 6 km by taxi to the bridge.

Highlights

  • Yesan Apple Sale Festa: growers and the Yedang Apple Horticultural Cooperative sell Yesan apples at discounted prices, on the two festival days only
  • Set at the Yedangho suspension bridge, a free 402 m footbridge over Yedang Reservoir that opened in April 2019 and passed 10 million visitors in June 2026
  • 23rd edition: Friday 30 October (10:00–20:00) and Saturday 31 October 2026 (10:00–18:00), free entry
  • Fireworks over Yedang Reservoir, and performances mixing jazz, gugak (Korean traditional music) and classical music, with apple wine and apple desserts
  • Apple games and quizzes with costumed performers, group apple games for all ages, and apple desserts and products from local makers
  • Beside the Yedangho Monorail, sculpture park and observation tower; the Yesan Market Samguk Festival runs in the town centre a week earlier (22–25 October 2026)

Who it suits. Best for fruit lovers, families and anyone who wants to pair a growers' apple market with a walk over a long lakeside suspension bridge, about two hours from Seoul; less suited to travellers who need English-language programmes, since none was published, or who would rather avoid a taxi, as the venue is about 6 km outside Yesan town.

Getting there

From Seoul

Janghang Line train from Yongsan Station to Yesan Station: 15–16 a day in the national timetable data for mid-October 2026, 1 h 52 m–1 h 59 m by Mugunghwa (₩8,300) or 1 h 44 m–1 h 51 m by Saemaeul or ITX-Maeum (₩12,300); there is no KTX. Or a bus from Seoul Central City (Honam line) to Yesan Terminal: 7 a day, 1 h 45 m, ₩9,500 regular or ₩13,900 deluxe. The festival is not in town but at the Yedangho suspension bridge in Eungbong-myeon, about 6 km from the town centre (KTO gives 5.9 km from Yesan Permanent Market); take a taxi from the station or terminal (about 20–30 minutes from Yesan Station, per a travel article), as no festival shuttle or local bus route was documented.

From Incheon Airport

No direct bus between Incheon Airport and Yesan Terminal appears in the October 2026 timetable (Yesan's 3 daily buses to Incheon go to Incheon Bus Terminal in the city). Go via Seoul: AREX to Seoul Station, then on to Yongsan for the Janghang Line, and a taxi from Yesan Station to the bridge.

Last leg from Yesan Station

Korail Janghang Line (Mugunghwa, Saemaeul and ITX-Maeum from Yongsan). Not walkable: the festival is at the Yedangho suspension bridge in Eungbong-myeon, about 6 km beyond Yesan town centre; take a taxi, about 20–30 minutes (travel article; fare not documented)

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle information was found for 2026.

Getting home

The festival runs to 20:00 on Friday 30 October and to 18:00 on Saturday 31 October. Trains from Yesan to Yongsan (about 1 h 45 m–2 h) and buses from Yesan Terminal to Seoul Central City run into the evening, but the last departures on 30–31 October could not be checked against Korail or the bus operator, so check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at Yesan Station, and the last bus at the terminal, before you go. Allow 20–30 minutes for the taxi of about 6 km back to town.

Parking

The Yedangho suspension bridge area has free parking (KTO data), including a smart car park (travel listings). No festival parking plan or capacity was published for 2026.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

  • Yedangho Monorail (예당호 모노레일)Before or after

A lakeside monorail that runs 1,320 m along the shore of Yedang Reservoir past the suspension bridge and sculpture park, about 22 minutes a ride in 24-seat cars. In October it runs 09:00–20:30 Friday to Sunday (KTO data updated 8 October 2026; last boarding not published), so it fits before the festival or after the 18:00 close on Saturday. Adults ₩8,000, youth ₩7,000, children ₩6,000. Tip: tickets are sold on site only.

Getting there: On foot from the suspension bridge, about 280 m (KTO data)

  • Yedangho Suspension Bridge and Music Fountain (예당호 출렁다리(음악분수))After

A music fountain on Yedang Reservoir beside the 402 m suspension bridge where the festival is held, with LED-lit shows and a jet that reaches up to 110 m. From October the evening shows are at 19:30 and 20:30 on weekdays, plus 18:30 at weekends (KTO data; none on Mondays), so on Friday catch the 20:30 show after the 20:00 close and on Saturday the 18:30 one after the 18:00 close. It is in Yesan-eup, the town the trains and buses leave from, so go for dinner after the festival; hours vary by shop (KTO data), so check ahead on Friday evening.
