What it is like

Jinhae is a naval-port district of Changwon, on the coast between Busan and Tongyeong, planted with about 360,000 king cherry trees. The festival grew out of a 1952 memorial for Admiral Yi Sun-sin at Bukwon Rotary, became an annual festival in 1963 and is now a ten-day event timed for peak bloom in late March and early April, hosted by Changwon City with a naval and military flavour that sets it apart from other blossom festivals.

There is no single venue. Jungwon Rotary in the town centre is the hub, with a brand fair and a seated food village replacing the old night market in 2026. Yeojwacheon, a narrow stream lined with trees and footbridges, is lit at night; Gyeonghwa Station, a former railway station where cherry branches arch over the tracks, is the other famous photo spot. On the opening weekend military bands and honour guards from Korea and abroad perform at Jinhae Public Stadium and parade from Bukwon Rotary. Over the ten days come a memorial rite for Admiral Yi, a 'victory procession', a Black Eagles air show and a fireworks show over the bay at Jinhaeru pavilion. The Naval Academy and Jinhae Naval Base open for ship tours, and the final weekend is a three-night ticketed music festival at the stadium.

Caveats: more than two million people come, roads close, and the peak-weekend car parks fill quickly from 09:00. Bloom timing is a gamble — the dates are fixed in February — and in 2025 wildfires cancelled the fireworks, air show and parade. Expect queues, not quiet.

Highlights

  • Yeojwacheon: a stream lined with cherry trees and footbridges next to Jinhae Station, lit at night for the Starlight Festival
  • Gyeonghwa Station: former railway platform where cherry branches arch over the tracks; reached by shuttle or city bus from Jinhae Station
  • Military Band and Honor Guard Festival at Jinhae Public Stadium on the opening weekend (17 teams, over 900 performers in 2026)
  • Sea fireworks over Jinhae Bay off Jinhaeru pavilion (1 Apr 2026 from 20:00), on the day of a Black Eagles air show at the Naval Academy
  • Korea Naval Academy, Jinhae Naval Base and Pier 11 open to the public during the festival
  • Cherry Blossom Music Festival: three ticketed concert nights at the stadium (3–5 Apr 2026: trot, ballad and retro, band days)

Who it suits. Best for photographers, spring day-trippers from Busan and anyone who wants Korea's biggest blossom scene with military parades thrown in; less suited to people who dislike crowds or need a fixed date, because over two million visitors come in ten days and the bloom may not match the schedule.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Changwon Jungang Station (about 2 h 44 m, standard seat ₩47,000–47,400), then a local bus or taxi to Jinhae. Or a direct intercity bus to Jinhae Intercity Bus Terminal from Seoul Nambu Terminal (4 a day) or Dong Seoul Terminal (3 a day), about 4 h 20 m–4 h 50 m, ₩38,900–48,400 (October 2026 fares).

From Busan

Intercity bus from Busan Seobu (Sasang) Bus Terminal — Metro Line 2 Sasang Station, Exits 3 and 5 — to Jinhae Intercity Bus Terminal: about 1 hour, ₩6,700, 27 buses a day in October 2026, roughly every 30–40 minutes (no reserved seats; board by platform number). The terminal is beside Jinhae Station, a short walk from Yeojwacheon.

From Incheon Airport

Domestic flight to Gimhae Airport (Busan), then the light rail to Sasang and the intercity bus to Jinhae; or AREX to Seoul Station and KTX to Changwon Jungang.

Last leg from Jinhae Intercity Bus Terminal (next to Jinhae Station, which has no regular passenger trains)

Intercity buses from Busan Sasang and Seoul; shuttle and tour-bus hub. Yeojwacheon is reached on foot through the pedestrian underpass beneath the railway beside Jinhae Station; Jungwon Rotary is a short walk south

Festival shuttle

In 2026 three free weekend shuttle routes ran; a local blog gives them as Blue: Bukwon Rotary – Jungang Market – Gyeonghwa Station – Jinhae Station; Yellow: temporary car parks – Jinhae Station – Gyeonghwa Station; Red: main sights. There was also a double-decker 'cherry blossom tour bus' loop from Jinhae Station and a 3.2 km bus-only lane Bukwon Rotary – Jinhae Station – Gyeonghwa Station. Routes and hours are set each year: check this edition's notice.

Getting home

No trains in Jinhae itself. Direct buses from Jinhae Intercity Bus Terminal to Seoul (Nambu Terminal or Dong Seoul) take about 4 h 20 m–4 h 50 m; by KTX from Changwon Jungang Station to Seoul Station it is about 2 h 44 m; intercity buses to Busan Seobu (Sasang) take about 1 hour. Korail's timetable changed on 1 November 2026 and the spring 2027 times are not out yet, so this page gives no last-train or last-bus time: check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station, and the last bus at Jinhae terminal, before the festival day, and buy the return bus ticket when you arrive. Night-time traffic out of Jinhae is slow on the peak weekend, so seeing Yeojwacheon lit up usually means staying over.

Parking

5,950 temporary spaces in 2026 on the edge of Jinhae, first-come; main lots fill after 09:00 on the peak weekend. Public lots: Jinhae IC (about 500), Segyero (about 300), Culture Centre (about 200), Gyeonghwa Market and Jinhui-ro lots. Changwon City ran a smart parking-reservation scheme.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Changes: 2026-10-16 — Full fact-first rewrite: hours, prices, stations, 2024–2027 editions, FAQs and sources. · 2026-10-16 — Rechecked against timetables, fare tables and organizer notices: conflicting dates and transport details; rail fares and train names after the 1 Sep 2026 KTX–SRT merger; last trains and buses back to Seoul. · 2026-10-18 — Added a photograph from the Korea Tourism Organization (Korea Tourism Content Lab), KOGL Type 1. · 2026-10-20 — Description corrected: the memorial rite is not a mid-week event (in 2024 it was on the first Saturday). · 2026-10-21 — Corrected after an independent fact audit: Busan and Seoul bus fares and times and the last bus back to Busan from the October 2026 timetable; music festival day two is ballad and retro, not K-pop; fireworks time and opening ceremony from Yonhap; unsupported ship-tour pre-registration removed; blog-only shuttle hours marked as such. · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the October 2026 last-train and last-bus times and the Busan bus operating hours, which the 1 November 2026 timetable replaces; the page now gives journey times and frequency and says to check the last train in Korail+ and the last bus at Jinhae terminal. · 2026-10-22 — Added a photo gallery: Cherry trees in bloom along the railway at Gyeonghwa Station in Jinhae (2024), Aerial view of Jinhae (2024) (KOGL Type 1, 한국관광콘텐츠랩). · 2026-10-30 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: removed the blog-only 2026 shuttle hours from the shuttle text and FAQ, added a 'Getting away' line; prices: no exact forward-looking fees found, unchanged.
