What it is like
Hakwon Farm sits on low, rolling hills in Gongeum-myeon, in the far west of Gochang County, and every spring its fields become one of Korea's best-known farm landscapes: wave after wave of green barley, cut through by narrow paths and marked by a red-roofed shed, a hut and a lone zelkova tree. The farm was cleared from an uncultivated hill in the early 1960s by Jin Ui-jong, later prime minister (1983–85), and his wife Lee Hak, and is now run by their son Jin Young-ho. Newspaper photographs made it famous in the late 1990s, and in 2004 it was designated a landscape-agriculture district and held the first barley festival, billed as Korea's first festival built around a farmed landscape.
The festival now runs for 23 days from a Saturday in mid-April across about 770,000 m² of barley by the county's count. The point is the walk: the barley is knee-high and at its greenest in late April, when yellow canola flowers among it, and turns pale gold through early May before the June harvest. Around the walk the county adds a small stage with gukak, trot and busking, Gochang Nongak farmers' music parades, a tractor-drawn tram past a tree-lined road and a bamboo grove, a weekend treasure hunt for lucky pouches hidden in the fields, and a food zone selling barley rice cakes, bokbunja (black raspberry) drinks and Gochang's Pungcheon eel, with every price on display. The fields are also a filming location (the hut from the drama Goblin, scenes from 100 Days My Prince and When Life Gives You Tangerines, and the films Welcome to Dongmakgol and A Werewolf Boy), and recent editions have added drama photo zones and costume rental.
In 2026 the 23rd edition ran 18 April–10 May under the theme 'Memories of spring, left on the road'. Walking the central field paths cost a few thousand won with a wristband, and the parking fee was returned in full as a Gochang Sarang gift voucher to spend at the stalls or in town. After the barley harvest the farm replants for summer sunflowers and zinnias and autumn buckwheat.
Honest caveats: Hakwon Farm is out in the countryside, about 16 km in a straight line from Gochang town, and Gochang has no railway, so without a car you need an express bus to Gochang and then a rural bus or taxi. The access road is a narrow two-lane road that jams at weekends; arrive before 9:00 or come on a weekday. The fields have little shade, and the programme is in Korean only.
Highlights
- Walking the narrow paths through about 770,000 m² of green barley on rolling hills, knee-high and at its greenest in late April
- Yellow canola in flower among the barley from late April
- Filming locations: the hut from the drama Goblin and fields seen in 100 Days My Prince, When Life Gives You Tangerines, Welcome to Dongmakgol and A Werewolf Boy, with drama photo zones and costume rental in 2025
- Tractor-drawn sightseeing tram past a tree-lined road and the Horangi Wangdaebat bamboo grove (a few thousand won one way, blog-reported)
- Weekend and holiday hunt for seven lucky pouches hidden in the fields, themed on Gochang's UNESCO designations
- Gochang Nongak farmers' music parades, gukak, trot and busking on a small stage in the fields
- Food zone with barley rice cakes, bokbunja drinks and Pungcheon eel, every price displayed
- Parking fee (about ₩10,000) returned in full as a Gochang Sarang gift voucher
Who it suits. Best for photographers, walkers and families who want an easy open-air spring day in the countryside, and for K-drama fans who know the fields from Goblin or When Life Gives You Tangerines. Less suited to travellers without a car who want a simple trip (the farm lies well beyond Gochang town and rural buses are sparse), to anyone after a full stage programme, and to visitors who need English-language guidance.
Getting there
From Seoul
Gochang has no railway, and Hakwon Farm is in the countryside about 16 km (straight line) west of Gochang town. Express buses run from Seoul Central City Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station, Honam-line side) to Gochang Munhwa Terminal: 16 a day in October 2026, scheduled at 3 h 06 m, ₩21,700 standard or ₩28,300 deluxe (October 2026 fares). From Gochang, take a rural bus towards Mujang (about 20 minutes) and change to a bus towards Gongeum, which stops at Hakwon Farm, or take a taxi from Mujang (about 20 minutes). By rail: KTX to Jeongeup on the Honam line (from Yongsan, or from Suseo since the 1 September 2026 KTX–SRT merger), then a bus from Jeongeup Intercity Bus Terminal to Gochang: 23 a day, 31 minutes, ₩4,500.
From Busan
Gochang's express terminal lists no Busan route, so change in Gwangju: intercity bus from Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal (Sasang, Line 2 Sasang Station) to Gwangju U-Square, 23 a day, 2 h 57 m, ₩28,300 deluxe; then a bus from U-Square to Gochang, about 48 minutes (22 buses a day run between the two), and a rural bus or taxi out to the farm. Allow at least 4.5 hours.
From Incheon Airport
Direct airport buses link Gochang and Incheon Airport: from Gochang there are 4 a day, about 3 h 40 m to Terminal 1, ₩46,400–₩65,000 depending on class. Airport-to-Gochang times were not checked; otherwise take AREX or an airport bus into Seoul and the Central City bus, then the local connection to the farm.
Last leg from Jeongeup Station (KTX)
Honam Line (KTX). Not walkable: Gochang has no railway. Take a taxi to Jeongeup Intercity Bus Terminal, a 31-minute bus to Gochang (₩4,500, 23 a day), then a rural bus or taxi to Hakwon Farm
Festival shuttle
Shuttle buses ran at weekends during the 2026 festival, and Wikitree notes that direct shuttles from Gochang terminal run on some festival weekends; routes and times were not published in the sources opened, so check Gochang County's tourism site before you go. Inside the farm a tractor-drawn sightseeing tram has run during the festival (a few thousand won one way, blog-reported).
Getting home
The festival closes at 18:00. Direct express buses from Gochang Munhwa Terminal to Seoul Central City take about 3 h 06 m; allow about 40 minutes from the farm back to Gochang by rural bus and taxi via Mujang, and more if you wait for a bus. The other way back is a bus to Gwangju U-Square (48 minutes) and an express bus on to Seoul Central City, or stay overnight in Gochang. Bus times for spring 2027 are not out yet, so this page gives no last-bus time: check the last buses at Gochang Munhwa Terminal before the festival day. Going back by KTX from Jeongeup, check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+; KTX and former SRT trains are booked there since the 1 September 2026 merger) or at the station before you go.
Parking
About ₩10,000 per car, paid at the entrance and refunded in full as a Gochang Sarang gift voucher. Lot 1 is next to the entrance and restaurants; lots 2–4 on nearby farmland are a 10–15 minute walk, and a lot for large buses was added in 2026. The access road is a narrow two-lane road that backs up at weekends, so arrive before 9:00.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
A stone-walled county fortress built in 1453 and one of Korea's three best-known walled towns: you walk the 1,684 m path along the wall, with views over Gochang town and a bamboo grove inside. It is in Gochang town, where the buses from Seoul arrive, so walk it before heading out to the farm; KTO lists it open all year from early morning to 22:00 (adults ₩3,000, mostly refunded as Gochang Sarang gift vouchers). Tip: azaleas flower along the wall in late April, the barley season.
Getting there: In Gochang town, about 40 min from the farm by rural bus and taxi via Mujang; a walk or short taxi ride from Gochang Munhwa Terminal
- Getting awayAfter
Getting back to Gochang is the slow part: the farm is in the countryside, the narrow two-lane access road backs up at weekends, and the rural bus via Mujang may mean a wait. Leave the farm well before the 18:00 close, allow at least 40 minutes to Gochang, and book the express bus back to Seoul in advance. If you miss it, go via Gwangju U-Square (48 minutes) or stay the night in Gochang.
Questions travelers ask

- Rural bus times between Gochang Munhwa Terminal, Mujang and Hakwon Farm were not checked; the local legs (about 20 minutes by bus to Mujang and 20 minutes by taxi) come from a 2025 travel blog, and the WebSearch budget ran out before a county timetable was found.
- A 2026 visitor guide places the weekend and holiday shuttle stop at a local elementary school; the school's name and the route were not confirmed.
- Hours differ: KTO gives 09:00–18:00, a 2026 visitor guide 08:30–18:30 with last entry at 17:50.
- The ₩3,000 field-path fee appears in KTO's 2026 data; whether it applied before 2026 is not known (2014 and 2025 sources describe entry as free), and the concessions are blog-reported.
- Phone numbers differ: KTO and JoongAng Daily give 063-562-9897, Jeonbuk Ilbo (2025) and a 2026 blog 063-563-9897. Addresses differ too: KTO 학원농장길 150, Jeonbuk Ilbo 학원농장길 158-6.
- Area figures vary by source: about 770,000 m² (230,000 pyeong) per KTO and Newsis, 63 ha (200,000 pyeong) per Jeonbuk Ilbo 2025, 300,000 pyeong per NewsSeoul 2024; the record follows KTO and Newsis.
- No visitor totals for 2024–2026 were found; 400,000 is a pre-festival estimate for 2025.
- The numbering (11th in 2014, 21st in 2024) counts every year from 2004; whether the 2020 and 2021 editions were held in person during COVID-19 was not checked.
- No KTO or official Japanese or Chinese name for the festival was found; names.ja, zhHans and zhHant left null.
- 2027 dates not announced as of 19 October 2026; the window is based on the 2024–2026 pattern.

- Bus frequencies, journey times and fares are from the October 2026 timetable as shown by a third-party mirror of the national timetable feed; the April–May timetable may differ.
- Last buses back from Gochang to Seoul (direct, and via Gwangju U-Square) on the festival dates under the timetable in force that day
- Gochang Eupseong: KTO gives the hours as 05:00–22:00 (Korean listing) and 04:00–22:00 (Chinese listing); the voucher refund is described as the full ₩3,000 in one source and ₩2,000 in another; the walking time from Gochang Munhwa Terminal was not checked.
