The 2025 plan was published on 25 March 2025 and the 2026 dates by 18 March 2026, so expect an announcement in March 2027. Not announced as of 19 October 2026.

The Biseulsan Azalea Culture Festival (비슬산 참꽃문화제) is Dalseong County's spring festival on Biseulsan in southern Daegu, timed to the bloom of a summit plateau of wild azaleas, about 300,000 pyeong (roughly 1 km²) at around 1,000 m beside Daegyeonsa temple. The 30th edition ran 17–19 April 2026; the 2027 dates are not announced and should fall on a mid-April weekend set by the bloom. Entry, concerts and the festival's electric buses up to the azalea field are free.

What it is like

Chamkkot, 'true flower', is the old folk name for jindallae, the edible Korean azalea, and Biseulsan (1,084 m) on Daegu's southern edge has a plateau of it just below the summit: about 300,000 pyeong, close to a square kilometre, at around 1,000 m, which Dalseong County calls the largest azalea colony in Korea. The county has held a festival for the bloom since 1997, usually over a weekend in mid-April.

It works on two levels. At the foot of the mountain, around the Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest and the Biseulsan Youth Hostel, there is a stage for local performers, booths selling Dalseong farm produce, a flea market and food trucks, and on opening day a giant 'azalea bibimbap' mixed with petals and local vegetables for as many servings as the year (2,024 in 2024, 2,026 in 2026). In 2026 the opening night moved off the mountain for the first time, to the plaza of the National Science Museum of Daegu in Technopolis, with a concert by trot and pop singers; the fireworks were called off for bad weather and a media-facade show of the azalea field took their place.

The real draw is up top. During the festival, free electric buses run from the Youth Hostel to the azalea field next to Daegyeonsa, a small temple with a three-storey stone pagoda, in about 20 minutes; on foot it is a 1½–2-hour climb through the forest. Above the fields the ridge continues to Daegyeonbong, and lower down a boulder stream is a designated natural monument.

The honest caveats: the bloom does not always match the dates (frost at 1,000 m can hold it back, and in 2026 the fields reached full bloom only on the last day); the queue for the summit buses passed two hours on the 2026 Sunday, when about 50,000 people came; car parks fill early; public transport from central Daegu is a weekend bus every 40–60 minutes; and everything is in Korean. The 2025 festival was cancelled eleven days before it was due to open, during the Gyeongsangbuk-do wildfires, when Daegu closed its forests.

Highlights

  • About 300,000 pyeong (roughly 1 km²) of wild azaleas on the summit plateau at around 1,000 m, billed by the county as Korea's largest azalea colony
  • Free electric buses from the Biseulsan Youth Hostel to the azalea field during the festival (2026: 14 buses about every 5 minutes from 08:00, about 20 minutes up)
  • Opening-day 'azalea bibimbap' mixed for as many servings as the year, with azalea petals and Dalseong produce (2,026 servings in 2026)
  • Opening-night concert by trot and pop singers (2026: Jang Yoon-jung, Cho Sung-mo, Norazo) and a media-facade show
  • Daegyeonsa, a temple with a three-storey stone pagoda at the edge of the azalea field, with busking near the summit
  • Weekend stage of local performers, Dalseong farm-produce booths, a flea market and food trucks at the foot of the mountain
  • A 1½–2-hour hike up through the Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest for those who would rather skip the bus queue

Who it suits. Best for walkers and photographers who want a mountain-top field of wild azaleas in mid-April and do not mind queues, and for local families who come for the free stage and food stalls at the base; less suited to travellers on a tight schedule (weekend buses are infrequent and the summit bus queue passed two hours in 2026) or anyone who needs English-language programmes.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station or Suseo to Dongdaegu (about 1 h 40 min–1 h 50 min; ₩39,000 standard class from Seoul since the 1 September 2026 fare cut). From Dongdaegu ride Daegu Metro Line 1 west to Daegok Station, where city bus 600 runs to the Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays only, every 40–60 minutes; bus Dalseong 5 also serves the forest at weekends. From the forest, the festival's free electric buses (or a 1½–2-hour hike) reach the azalea field.

From Busan

Intercity buses from Busan Seobu (Sasang) Terminal go to Hyeonpung (about 1 h 30 min and ₩11,500 in a 2019 traveller's report), then a taxi to the recreation forest (about ₩10,000 in 2019). Or take a train to Dongdaegu and continue as from Seoul.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, then KTX to Dongdaegu and on by Metro Line 1 and bus 600 as from Seoul. With a late arrival, stay overnight in Daegu and go up early.

Last leg from Daegok Station (transfer to bus 600)

Daegu Metro Line 1. Not walkable: city bus 600 (weekends and public holidays) runs from Daegok to the Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest; its journey time was not published on the pages opened

Festival shuttle

2026: free shuttle buses ran often from two temporary car parks near the recreation-forest entrance junction (Yong-ri 444-1 and 889-1, Yuga-eup) to the event site, and free electric buses carried visitors from the Biseulsan Youth Hostel to the azalea field from the morning: 14 buses about every 5 minutes, about 20 minutes each way, with waits of more than two hours on Sunday 19 April. In 2023 visitors took a ticket at the ticket office and waited to be counted onto a bus. In 2025 the azalea tour bus was scheduled from 29 March to 6 May and free only for ten days from 11 April; the current fare outside the free days was not found.

Getting home

Bus 600 runs only at weekends and on public holidays, every 40–60 minutes; its last departure from the forest was not found, so allow time. Back to Seoul, KTX trains from Dongdaegu take about 1 h 40 min–1 h 50 min. Train times changed on 1 November 2026 and the spring 2027 times are not out yet, so this page gives no last-train time: check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station before the festival day. The 2026 main-event programme ran 08:00–16:00.

Parking

The recreation forest's public car park is free but filled on the 2026 festival Sunday. The county set up temporary car parks near the recreation-forest entrance junction (2025–2026) linked by shuttle; in 2023 it designated seven car parks for 5,660 cars.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

Booking
No booking. The electric buses to the azalea field are first come, first served from the Youth Hostel stop; expect long queues at weekends.
English on site
No English programme, signage or interpretation is documented; the announcements found were in Korean only.
Crowds
About 100,000 visitors over three days in 2026 (about 50,000 on Sunday 19 April) and about 75,000 over two days in 2024. The 2026 queue for the summit buses passed two hours and the entrance road and car parks filled.
Best time to go
Be at the Youth Hostel stop as soon as the electric buses start in the morning on the main-event days. The bloom can run late: in 2026 the fields were in full bloom on 19 April and expected to hold into the next week; frost at 1,000 m can shift it. The county live-streams the azalea field on YouTube from early April.
What to bring
Walking shoes and a warm, windproof layer (the fields are at about 1,000 m), water and snacks for the bus queue, and a hat for the open summit.
Rain
The 2026 opening-night fireworks were cancelled for bad weather and replaced with a media-facade show; no formal rain policy published.
Toilets
Restrooms at the Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest (KTO data); facilities at the summit were not documented.
Step-free access
A barrier-free tourist information counter in the lobby of Hotel Azelia, in front of the recreation forest, lends strollers, wheelchairs and adult walkers free (opened 2023). The 2026 opening night was on the flat Science Museum plaza; the summit fields are reached by the electric bus or a steep 1½–2-hour walk.

Temporary car parks near the recreation-forest entrance junction (Yuga-eup, Yong-ri 444-1 and 889-1) with free shuttles to the site.
2024 13–14 Apr 2024 ended Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest area.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Daegyeonsa Temple (대견사)Before or after

A small Jogye Order temple above 1,000 m at the edge of the summit azalea field, rebuilt in 2011–2014 on the site of a Silla-period temple where the monk Iryeon is said to have gathered material for the Samguk Yusa; its old three-storey stone pagoda survives, and the shrine holds a Buddha relic from Sri Lanka instead of a statue. The electric bus stops at the temple entrance, so see it on the same trip up (open 05:00–19:00, free). Tip: by the pagoda you look down on the head of the rock stream.

Getting there: At the top stop of the festival's free electric bus from the Youth Hostel (about 20 min; queues passed two hours on the 2026 Sunday), or a 1½–2-hour hike

  • Biseulsan Rock Stream (비슬산 암괴류)After

Natural Monument No. 435: a 'river' of boulders about 2 km long and up to about 80 m wide that starts near Daegyeonsa at about 1,000 m and runs down the mountain to about 450 m. See it by walking down instead of queueing for the electric bus back: the trail between the azalea field and the recreation forest passes beside it and takes 1½–2 hours. Start early: bus 600 to Daegok Station runs only every 40–60 minutes at weekends. Tip: wear proper walking shoes; the trail is steep.

Getting there: On foot: the trail from the azalea field down to the recreation forest passes it; allow 1½–2 hours to the bottom

Questions travelers ask

When is the Biseulsan Azalea Festival 2027?

Not announced yet. Recent editions ran 13–14 April 2024 and 17–19 April 2026 (2025 was cancelled because of wildfires), so expect a mid-April weekend chosen for the bloom; the dates have come out in March.

Is the festival free?

Yes. Entry, the performances, the shuttle buses from the temporary car parks and, during the festival, the electric buses up to the azalea field were free in 2026. You pay for food and produce at the booths.

How do I get up to the azalea field?

Take the free electric bus from the Biseulsan Youth Hostel (2026: 14 buses about every 5 minutes from the morning, about 20 minutes), or hike 1½–2 hours up from the recreation forest. Weekend queues for the bus can pass two hours.

When do the azaleas bloom on Biseulsan?

Usually in mid-to-late April. In 2026 the fields were in full bloom on 19 April; in 2021 forest staff forecast full bloom between 10 and 18 April. Frost at about 1,000 m can delay it, so watch the county's YouTube live stream from early April.

How do I get there by public transport?

KTX to Dongdaegu, Daegu Metro Line 1 to Daegok Station, then city bus 600 to the Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest. It runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays only, every 40–60 minutes; bus Dalseong 5 also runs at weekends.

Why was the 2025 festival cancelled?

Dalseong County called it off on 1 April 2025 during the Gyeongsangbuk-do wildfires, when the national wildfire alert was raised to 'serious' and Daegu banned entry to its forests. Some trails and a weekend bus stayed open for hikers.

  • The official site biseul.kr was not opened: 2026 opening-night start time, stage timetable and the 2027 plan could not be read from it.
  • Azalea tour bus fare outside the free festival days and its 2026 season were not found; KTO data still show the older firefly electric car at ₩5,000 adults / ₩3,000 children, which news reports say was replaced by electric buses in 2023.
  • Bus 600 and Dalseong 5 timetables (first and last departures, journey time from Daegok Station) were not checked on businfo.daegu.go.kr; the 40–60-minute interval comes from an undated facility page.
  • The 2025 edition's planned end date is inferred as 13 April from the programme days; no notice giving the full planned period was opened.
  • Edition numbers do not run evenly (18th in 2015, 25th in 2020–2021, 28th in 2024, 30th in 2026, first held 1997); the count appears to include cancelled years.
  • Whether the 2027 opening night will again use the National Science Museum of Daegu plaza is not known.
  • Foreign-card acceptance at booths, pet rules on trails and buses, and summit restrooms were not documented.
  • Busan route figures come from a 2019 traveller post and may be out of date.
  • Last train back from Dongdaegu to Seoul (and the last bus 600 from the forest) on the festival dates under the timetables in force that day
  • Rock stream and trail: position beside the trail and the walk down come from a 2015 news report and 2024 county-sourced reports; the county facility page (bisulsan.dssiseol.or.kr) was not opened in this check, and trail closures for 2027 are unknown

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a Wikimedia Commons photograph of Biseulsan in May 2018 (최옥석, CC BY-SA 3.0). · 2026-10-20 — Hike time aligned with the rest of the page (1½–2 hours). · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the October 2026 late-evening KTX times from Dongdaegu, which the 1 November 2026 timetable replaces; the page now gives the journey time and says to check the last train in Korail+. · 2026-10-31 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: removed the 2026 electric-bus start time from the shuttle text, the FAQ and the best-time tip (frequency and journey time kept; last-train text already sends readers to Korail+), and dropped two sources quoting old last-train times; prices: entry and summit buses free, no change
