What it is like

Jeongok-ri, beside the Hantan River in Jeongok-eup, is one of Korea's best-known Paleolithic sites. Excavations began there in 1979, and the county has held a Paleolithic festival on the grounds since 1993. Every October the same open grounds turn into a chrysanthemum garden. Yeoncheon County's Agricultural Technology Center grows the plants and sets out themed beds, arches and large flower figures from the site entrance to the central lawn. In 2025 that came to about 60,000 plants; in 2024 the county spoke of ten million blooms over about 16,500 m², with chrysanthemum figures of a subway train, a mammoth and a windmill.

The 2026 edition, the 8th, runs for ten days from Friday 16 to Sunday 25 October, 09:00–18:00. Its theme, "Breath of Goguryeo, blooming in chrysanthemums", refers to the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo: the main photo zone is a Goguryeo castle, and there are Goguryeo-themed exhibits and activities, costume try-on, instant photos and a hands-on zone, along with a dog playground, food trucks and stalls selling local farm produce.

In 2026 the festival charges admission: ₩5,000 for an adult, ₩3,000 at the reduced rate, and ₩4,000 or ₩2,000 per person for groups. The whole fee comes back as Yeoncheon Love gift certificates, the county's local currency, which can be spent at the farm-produce market and food stalls, so in practice the ticket pays for lunch or a bag of produce. A county study in November 2024 had argued that paid entry would raise the festival's quality and help the local economy.

Over the last weekend the grounds also host the Yeoncheon Yulmu Festival, a three-day farm market built around Job's tears (yulmu), a grain of which Yeoncheon grows about 60% of Korea's supply. The 2025 market drew about 150,000 people, and a third-party listing gives 23–25 October for 2026.

The honest caveats: this is a county-run flower show, smaller and simpler than the big chrysanthemum festivals in the south; off-peak trains to Jeongok ran only about once an hour when the line opened, and Yongsan to Yeoncheon, one stop beyond Jeongok, took about 106 minutes; information is in Korean only; and the gift certificates have to be spent locally.

Highlights

  • Chrysanthemum beds, arches and flower figures across the Jeongok-ri Paleolithic site, with a Goguryeo-castle photo zone on the 2026 theme "Breath of Goguryeo, blooming in chrysanthemums"
  • Entry ₩5,000 (₩3,000 reduced), refunded in full as Yeoncheon Love gift certificates for the farm-produce market and food stalls
  • Goguryeo-themed exhibits and activities, costume try-on, instant photos and a visitor hands-on zone (2026)
  • Dog playground, food trucks and local farm-produce stalls on site (2026)
  • Yeoncheon Yulmu (Job's tears) Festival farm market on the same grounds over the final weekend: about 150,000 visitors and more than 200 booths in 2025
  • On Seoul Subway Line 1 since 16 December 2023: Jeongok Station, then a short bus or taxi ride to the gate

Who it suits. Best for families, older travellers and flower photographers who want an easy autumn day trip from Seoul by subway, perhaps combined with the nearby Jeongok Prehistory Museum; less suited to anyone after evening events (the grounds close at 18:00), English-language programmes or a quick trip, since trains to Jeongok are infrequent.

Getting there

From Seoul

Seoul Subway Line 1 to Jeongok Station (전곡역): take a train bound for Yeoncheon (연천) on the northern branch through Cheongnyangni, Uijeongbu and Dongducheon. When the extension opened in December 2023, Yeoncheon trains ran about once an hour (every 30 minutes at rush hour), and some started at Gwangwoondae, where riders from central Seoul change from a Dongducheon- or Uijeongbu-bound train. Yongsan to Yeoncheon, one stop beyond Jeongok, took about 106 minutes. From Jeongok Station take a local bus from the Nonghyup junction in front of the station, or a taxi, to the site entrance at Yangyeon-ro 1510.

From Incheon Airport

AREX to Seoul Station, then Seoul Subway Line 1 on a train bound for Yeoncheon to Jeongok Station, and a local bus or taxi to the site.

Last leg from Jeongok Station

Seoul Subway Line 1 (Gyeongwon Line). No official walking time found. Local buses run from the Nonghyup junction in front of the station to the 전곡리선사유적지입구 stop, about 50 m from the gate; buses 39, 39-2, 53-5 and 53-6 stop at the Jeongok Prehistory Museum, 5 minutes' walk from the site.

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle bus was found for 2026. The free shuttles from Jeongok Station seen at the county's Paleolithic Festival in May were not announced for the chrysanthemum festival.

Getting home

The grounds close at 18:00. In the December 2023 weekend timetable, Yeoncheon-bound trains left City Hall about once an hour, with none in the 13:00, 17:00 or 18:00 hours, and the last at 22:36; return times from Jeongok were not found and timetables may have changed since, so check the next southbound train in the Korail app before leaving. Soyosan-bound trains ran about every 30 minutes, and local buses link Jeongok with Soyosan and Dongducheon stations if no through train is due.

Parking

The Jeongok-ri site has a large free car park to the right of the entrance (third-party travel listing); no 2026 festival parking or traffic plan was published on the pages opened.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
