What it is like
Jindo is a large island at Korea's southwest corner. Once a year, in March or April, when the spring tides are at their lowest, a ridge of sand and shell between Hoedong-ri on Jindo and the small island of Modo stands clear of the water for about an hour. The path is roughly 2.8 km long and 30–40 m wide, and thousands of people walk out on it in rubber boots, picking up clams and seaweed. Local legend says a grandmother named Ppong, left behind when villagers fled tigers to Modo, prayed to the Dragon King and the sea opened; the festival begins with a rite at her shrine on the shore. The county has held the festival since the late 1970s. The tide logic matters for planning: the road opens for one window in the morning and one in the evening on each festival day, each about an hour, and the times move later each day. In 2026 the evening low tides moved from about 17:30 on 17 April to 19:30 on 20 April, with the road appearing about an hour before each. Organizers set the dates each February or March once the year's tide tables are out, which is why no 2027 dates exist yet. Around the crossing are Jindo Arirang and shamanic performances, a torch parade along the road, and concerts with fireworks at Cheolma Park in Jindo-eup. Caveats: the crossing is crowded, the shore is a long walk from the nearest bus stop, lodging on Jindo sells out, and parades and fireworks are cancelled under fire or weather alerts, as in 2025.
Highlights
- Walking the exposed seabed from Hoedong to Modo island, about 2.8 km each way, during a one-hour low-tide window (evening low tides around 17:30–19:30 in 2026; the road appears about an hour before)
- Torch parade along the sea road and a laser/multimedia show on the shore after dark
- Rite at the Ppong Grandmother shrine and Jindo intangible-heritage performances (Jindo Arirang, Ganggangsullae, Ssitgimgut, Jindo drum)
- Miracle Concert at Cheolma Park in Jindo-eup on festival evenings (Song Ga-in and Jang Min-ho in 2026) with fireworks on opening night
- Jindo Art Beach: about 1 km of sculptures and media art along the coast road, lit at night
- Modo island programs reached across the road: photo rally, village-cooked seafood meals and pansori on the legend
Who it suits. Best for travelers who want to see a rare tidal phenomenon and are willing to plan around exact tide times, and for photographers; less suited to anyone on a tight schedule or without transport, because the shore is remote, the window is short and dates move every year.
Getting there
From Seoul
Express bus from Seoul Central City Terminal to Jindo Public Bus Terminal, about 4 h 40 m (4 a day); or KTX (from Yongsan or Suseo) to Mokpo then an intercity bus to Jindo (about 5 h 30 m total). From Jindo terminal take a local bus toward Gagye/Hoedong or Songgung/Hoedong and get off at Hoedong, then walk about 40 minutes to the shore, or take a taxi.
From Busan
Busan Seobu Intercity Bus Terminal (Sasang, Line 2 Sasang Station) has 2 direct intercity buses a day to Jindo Public Bus Terminal, about 5 h 13 m (deluxe ₩51,400, premium ₩60,400), and 2 a day back. For more choice, change at Gwangju U-Square: 23 buses a day from Busan Seobu (2 h 57 m, ₩28,300 deluxe), then 14 a day to Jindo (about 2 h, ₩21,400 deluxe). These counts are from the October 2026 timetable; check departure times at the terminal before you go. Then the local bus to Hoedong or a taxi as above.
Festival shuttle
A shuttle-bus section existed in the 2026 visitor guide but its routes were published only as images; not verified.
Getting home
Not a day trip from Seoul: the direct express bus takes about 4 h 40 m each way (4 a day) and the evening sea-road window ends around dusk, so plan to stay on Jindo or in Mokpo. Check the last bus at Jindo Public Bus Terminal, and for the Mokpo route check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are booked since the 1 Sep 2026 merger) or at the station, before you go.
Parking
Five car parks near the shore in 2026: Gagye 1, Gagye 2, observatory, Insan villa and Monari lots.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

- Booking
- No ticket booking; contest entries (gimbap, baking, dance) were submitted through the Jindo County tourism website. Lodging on Jindo is the thing to book early, or stay in Mokpo near the train station.
- English on site
- The festival ran a foreigner-oriented K-pop contest and a 'K-World Star' contest; the county's English page exists, but no on-site interpretation is documented.
- Crowds
- Thousands walk out together at each opening; the shore is packed in the hour before the evening window.
- Best time to go
- Be at the shore at least an hour before the published evening opening; the water recedes for 45–60 minutes, so walk out at a relaxed pace and come back briskly.
- What to bring
- Rubber boots or galoshes (sold on site), a change of socks, a torch for the evening crossing, and a bag for clams if you plan to gather them.
- Rain
- Parades and fireworks are cancelled in dangerous conditions (the 2025 torch parade and fireworks were cancelled under a forest-fire alert); the tidal opening itself is not affected by rain.

- Step-free access
- The seabed path is wet, uneven sand and shell; not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Before or after the festival
Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.
- Unrimsanbang (운림산방)Before
The studio and home of the late-Joseon painter Heo Ryeon (Sochi): a hanok and garden around a lotus pond with a small island, the Sochi Memorial Hall with his work, and the free Namdo Traditional Art Museum by the ticket office. Go late morning or early afternoon, before heading to the shore: it is open 09:00–18:00 from March to October (last entry 17:00; adult ₩2,000 in a 2026 listing), well before the evening low tide. Tip: it is reportedly closed on Mondays, so check the day.
Getting there: Before the shore, from Jindo Public Bus Terminal: taxi about 7 min (about ₩11,000) or the Sacheon–Ssanggyesa local bus to the 운림산방·첨찰산 stop
- Jindo Art Beach (진도아트비치)Before
An open-air exhibition of about 21 sculptures and media-art works along roughly 1 km of the coast road by the sea road, in three sections, lit after dark. Walk it while you wait for the evening crossing: the road appears about an hour before the evening low tide, so see the works in daylight, then be back at the shore at least an hour before the published time. Tip: it was set up for the 2025 festival as an improved version of earlier years and is not yet confirmed for 2027.
Getting there: At the festival site on the Hoedong shore, on foot; free
- Getting awayAfter
Getting off the shore after the evening crossing is the slow part: thousands leave at once, and the Hoedong bus stop is about 40 minutes on foot. Book your room on Jindo early (rooms sell out) or stay in Mokpo near the station, and before you walk out, know how you will get back to Jindo-eup: the local bus from Hoedong (times not verified here, check at Jindo terminal) or a taxi.
