What it is like

Gyeongju's cherry blossom festival is a three-day street festival on the stone-wall road (돌담길) that runs along the walls of Daereungwon, the park of Silla royal tombs in the centre of the city. The city closes about 500 m of road, from the Hwangnam-bbang intersection to the Cheomseongdae intersection, and fills it with street performers, lights under the trees, food trucks and a craft market. It began in April 2017 as the Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival (경주벚꽃축제), a ten-day event that drew about 350,000 people; the 2018 edition spread across the Bomun Tourist Complex, the Dongbu historic site and Silla Daejong Park and was made a Gyeongsangbuk-do designated festival. By 2023 it had moved to the stone-wall road, and in 2024 it was renamed after it. In 2026 it was billed as the Gyeongju Daereungwon Stone-Wall Road Festival (경주 대릉원돌담길 축제), run by the Gyeongju Cultural Foundation for Gyeongju City, though KTO still lists it as 경주벚꽃축제.

The 2026 edition ran 3–5 April, Friday to Sunday, 13:00–22:00. Street arts (bubble shows, circus, mime, dance and DJs) ran until 20:00, then lights and lasers took over the trees until 22:00. Along the road were a restaurant zone of food trucks with QR ordering and reusable dishes, a handmade-craft market, a play area for children on the closed road, free upcycling workshops, photo zones with free photo printing, and, new that year, a quiet viewing room for reading, copying out texts, classical music and knitting. The 2025 edition (4–6 April) had magic, mime, fire shows and jazz on three stages, light shows at 20:00 and 21:00, and 'cherry coins' made from recycled bottle caps for an eco lottery.

The dates follow the bloom, and they move. In 2024 the city pushed the festival back a week, from 22–24 March to 29–31 March, because of rain in the forecast and late blossoms. In 2026 it was first announced for 27–29 March with a warning that it could shift by about a week, and it was held on 3–5 April; the city said the blossoms had peaked across Gyeongju by 7 April. Entry is free, and Daereungwon itself, beside the road, is free to enter too, with the Cheonmachong tomb open inside for a small fee. The caveats: weekend crowds are heavy, nearby car parks fill early, the programme is in Korean, and the KTX station is outside the centre, about 20 minutes by taxi.

Highlights

  • About 500 m of cherry-lined road along the Daereungwon royal-tomb walls, closed to cars from the Hwangnam-bbang intersection to the Cheomseongdae intersection
  • Cherry Blossom Street Arts (벚꽃거리예술路), 13:00–20:00 in 2026: bubble shows, circus, mime, dance and DJ sets; in 2025, magic, mime, fire shows and jazz on three stages
  • Cherry Blossom Lights (벚꽃라이트), 20:00–22:00 in 2026: lighting and lasers under the trees
  • Stone-wall road restaurant (13:00–22:00) with food trucks, QR ordering and reusable dishes, and a handmade-craft market (13:00–20:00)
  • For families: a play area on the closed road and free upcycling workshops with local studios (13:00–18:00)
  • New in 2026: a quiet blossom-viewing room for reading, copying out texts, classical music and knitting
  • Free photo printing, photo zones and a postcard event; Daereungwon tomb park and Hwangnidan-gil are next door

Who it suits. Best for travellers already in Gyeongju or on a day trip from Seoul who want blossoms with a historic backdrop, an evening light show and easy street food; good for families (play area, free workshops). Less suited to anyone who needs fixed dates months ahead, since the festival moves with the bloom, or who dislikes dense weekend crowds.

Getting there

From Seoul

KTX from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station, the high-speed station outside the city centre that was built as Singyeongju: about 2 h 15 m (1 h 57 m–3 h 15 m depending on the train), with 27–28 trains a day in autumn 2026. The national timetable feed lists the standard KTX fare as ₩44,500; a 2024 guide gave ₩49,300 before Korail cut KTX fares by about 10% on average when KTX and SRT merged on 1 September 2026, and both are now booked in Korail's own apps and English site, so check the fare there. From the station, a taxi to the tomb-park district takes about 20 minutes, or city bus 60 or 61 reaches the Cheomseongdae stop, at the Cheomseongdae end of the festival road, in about 40 minutes. Express buses from Seoul to Gyeongju take about 3–4 hours.

Last leg from Gyeongju Station (KTX)

KTX, Gyeongbu high-speed line (formerly Singyeongju Station). Not walkable: about 20 minutes by taxi, or about 40 minutes on city bus 60 or 61 to the Cheomseongdae stop beside the tomb parks

Festival shuttle

No festival shuttle was reported for 2024–2026; the city asks visitors to use public transport.

Getting home

The festival runs until 22:00, with the lights from 20:00. KTX trains from Gyeongju Station back to Seoul Station take about 2 h 15 m. Train times changed on 1 November 2026 and the spring 2027 times are not out yet, so this page gives no last-train time: check the last train in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are booked since the 1 September 2026 merger) or at the station before the festival day, and allow about 20 minutes by taxi from the festival road to the station.

Parking

Public car parks near Daereungwon fill early; a 2026 visitor guide advises arriving before 09:00 at weekends, or parking further out near Gyeongju Station and continuing by bus or Tasilla (타실라) public bike. Daereungwon's own car park charges a small fee, a few thousand won for the first two hours. The festival road itself is closed to all traffic for the whole festival; in 2025 it closed from the day before the festival until the day after.

How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English

Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.

Before you go

1330 · Travel hotline

The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.

112 / 119 · Emergencies

112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.

T-money card

Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.

Maps

Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.

Trains and buses

Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.

AdmissionFreeFree per KTO; food, drink and market goods are paid
Booking
No booking: all programmes are walk-up. The 2026 doll event was a draw (send a story and a drawing; winners got a doll by post). Enquiries: 054-776-5267 (Gyeongju Cultural Foundation).
English on site
In 2025 the city handed out festival guides in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese. Announcements and the official pages are in Korean, but the street arts, lights and market need little language; haps Magazine published an English preview in 2026.
Crowds
Crowded, especially at weekends, when the whole of Gyeongju is busy in blossom season; the city added crowd-control and safety staff and an emergency medical set-up in 2025 and 2026.
Best time to go
Morning for a quiet walk under the trees before the 13:00 start, afternoon for the performances, and 20:00–22:00 for the lights. Inside Daereungwon is calmer than the festival road. In 2026 the city said the blossoms had peaked across Gyeongju by 7 April.
What to bring
A light jacket for cold April evenings, comfortable shoes, a phone for QR ordering at the food trucks, and a camera for the lit trees after 20:00.
Rain
Outdoor festival. In 2024 the city postponed it by a week for a rain forecast and a late bloom, saying the street performances and light show would have to be cancelled in rain because of the eco-friendly materials and electrical wiring. Check the city's notices if rain is forecast.
Step-free access
The festival site is a flat road of about 500 m, closed to cars; no other access information was published.

Before or after the festival

Places you can fit in before or after the festival without missing the shuttle or the last train or bus back.

  • Gyeongju National Museum (국립경주박물관)Before

The national museum of the Silla kingdom, with the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok, Silla gold and the finds from Cheonmachong, the tomb you can enter at Daereungwon. Entry is free (collect a free ticket at the door) and it opens at 10:00, so a morning here fits before the festival opens at 13:00; it closes at 18:00 on weekdays and later on Saturdays. See the Cheonmachong finds here first, then walk into the tomb itself in the afternoon.

Getting there: About 2 km from the Cheomseongdae end of the festival road (KTO data): roughly 30 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride

  • Hwangnidan-gil (경주 황리단길)Before

Gyeongju's youngest street, between the Naenam and Hwangnam Elementary School intersections: 1960s–70s houses turned into cafés, small shops and restaurants that spill into the side alleys (the name plays on Seoul's Gyeongnidan-gil). Have lunch here before the festival opens at 13:00 and walk straight onto the stone-wall road; blossom weekends fill the whole of Gyeongju, so eat early. It also works for a coffee between the afternoon shows and the evening lights.

Getting there: Within about 1 km of the festival road (KTO data), on foot

  • Daereungwon tomb park and Cheonmachong (경주 대릉원 일원)Before or after

The walled park of 23 Silla royal tombs whose wall the festival road follows; inside, Cheonmachong is the one tomb you can enter, a 5th–6th-century mound where a gold crown and the Heavenly Horse painting were found in 1973. The park is free, 09:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30 at the main gate; Cheonmachong to 21:30, small adult fee), so it fits any gap in the festival day. It is calmer than the festival road, but food and pets are not allowed inside, so finish your food-truck snack first.

Getting there: Beside the festival road, on foot; free entry

  • Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond (동궁과 월지)Before or after

The Silla palace pond also known as Anapji, whose lit pavilions are reflected in the water after dark: Gyeongju's best-known night view. Open 09:00–22:00 (last entry 21:30), adult ticket about ₩3,000. Go at dusk, when the lights meet the last blue of the sky, then walk back for the festival lights (20:00–22:00 in 2026), or go after them if you stay the night; on a day trip, check the last train first. A mobile ticket bought in advance skips the booth queue.

Getting there: On foot from the Cheomseongdae end of the festival road, or a short taxi ride; free car park (check the walking route in a map app)

Is the Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival free?

Yes. KTO lists it as free, and Daereungwon tomb park beside the road is free to enter too (the Cheonmachong tomb inside charges a small fee). You pay only for food and market goods.

Where exactly is the festival held?

On the stone-wall road (돌담길) along the walls of the Daereungwon tomb park in central Gyeongju. About 500 m of road, from the Hwangnam-bbang intersection to the Cheomseongdae intersection, is closed to cars for the festival. Hwangnidan-gil and Cheomseongdae are within about 1 km.

What time is the light show?

In 2026 the Cherry Blossom Lights ran from 20:00 to 22:00 each night. In 2025 the light shows were at 20:00 and 21:00, and in 2024 at 19:00 and 20:00. The festival opens at 13:00.

How do I get there from Seoul?

Take the KTX from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station (about 2 h 15 m), then a taxi of about 20 minutes to the tomb-park district, or city bus 60 or 61 to the Cheomseongdae stop in about 40 minutes.

What is the last train back to Seoul?

This page gives no time: train times changed on 1 November 2026 and the spring 2027 timetable is not out yet. Check the last KTX from Gyeongju Station to Seoul Station in the Korail+ app (코레일+, where KTX and former SRT trains are now booked) or at the station before the festival day. The ride takes about 2 h 15 m; allow about 20 minutes by taxi from the festival road to the station.

Where else can I see cherry blossoms in Gyeongju?

Bomun Lake, whose 8 km lakeside road takes about 2 hours to walk; Heungmu-ro by General Kim Yu-shin's tomb; and Bulguksa, where double cherry blossoms open after the regular ones, so it is worth a visit if you arrive late in the season.

What we could not confirm

  • Official Japanese and Chinese festival names not found (KTO's foreign-language listings for contentId 2485128 were not reachable through search)
  • Official name: the 2026 edition was billed as '경주 대릉원돌담길 축제', KTO's main listing is still titled '경주벚꽃축제', and 2025 reports used both that and '대릉원 돌담길 벚꽃축제'; the organizer's page (garts.kr) was not opened
  • 2024: no post-festival report was opened confirming that the rescheduled 29–31 March dates went ahead; street-performance counts differ between reports (16 teams/39 shows vs 20 teams/40+ shows)
  • History between 2018 and 2023 (2019 edition, whether 2020–2022 were cancelled, the year of the move to the stone-wall road) was not established; the 2023 edition is known only from 2024 reports
  • No visitor totals were found for 2024, 2025 or 2026; a Metro Seoul report of 7 April 2025 could not be opened (server error)
  • Daily hours for 2024 and 2025 were not published in the sources opened; light-show times changed each year (19:00/20:00 in 2024, 20:00/21:00 in 2025, 20:00–22:00 in 2026)
  • Whether the food trucks' QR ordering accepts foreign cards
  • Which car park 'near Gyeongju Station' the 2026 guide means (the KTX station or the old downtown station site)
  • City bus routes 60 and 61 and the 40-minute time come from a blog citing the official site; the Busan route was not researched
  • The ₩44,500 KTX fare and journey times come from a mirror of the October 2026 timetable; spring 2027 fares and times may differ
  • 2027 dates not announced as of 19 October 2026
  • Last train back from Gyeongju Station to Seoul Station on the festival dates under the timetable in force that day
  • Walking time from the Cheomseongdae end of the festival road to Donggung and Wolji and to Gyeongju National Museum was not found in a source (the museum figure is KTO's 2 km distance).
  • Cheonmachong's current adult fee: KTO-based listings give ₩3,000, the city's 2023 plan ₩2,000; the city's admission page (gyeongju.go.kr) could not be opened, so the page says 'a small fee'.
  • Official pages for Daereungwon and Hwangnidan-gil: the city tourism site refused the connection; KTO links '상상 황리단길' (황리단길.kr), whose operator was not verified.

Changes: 2026-10-19 — Added to the site: fact-first record (dates, hours, prices, getting there, sources). · 2026-10-19 — Added a Wikimedia Commons photograph of cherry blossoms near Bulguksa, not the festival road (myllissa from Seoul, S. Korea, CC BY 2.0). · 2026-10-21 — Transport: removed the October 2026 train times (first train, evening trains and last KTX back to Seoul), which the 1 November 2026 timetable replaces; the page now gives journey time and frequency and says to check the last train in Korail+. · 2026-10-30 — Nearby rewritten as 'Before or after the festival' (shuttle and last-train fit); transport: removed the 2025 road-closure clock times from parking and pointed the last-train check to the Korail+ app; prices: Daereungwon parking and the Cheonmachong fee given as rounded amounts instead of exact fees.
