What it is like
Boryeong is a small city on Korea's west coast, and Daecheon Beach is its main resort. Since 1998 the city has built a 17-day festival around the grey tidal mud from its shoreline, which has been sold as a cosmetic ingredient since 1996. The paid area on Mud Plaza is a fenced set of pools: a mud slide with the longest queue, a mud pool for free play, colour mud painting and, new in 2026, a Mud Infinity Pool facing the sea. A free Mud Cask Zone next to it has 20 self-service massage tubs, and about 350 tons of mud are brought in fresh each day. A separate Family Zone admits only guardians with children aged 3 to 12; a water park is included with any wristband. Outside the fences the beach stays free, with EDM and DJ sets each evening, drone light shows on the opening and closing nights, and televised K-pop, hip-hop and rock concerts on most weekends. Expect midsummer heat, long shower queues before closing and roughly 210,000 people on the opening weekend, many of them foreign residents and tourists; weekday afternoons are far calmer. The mud zones close for one midweek safety inspection, and children under 140 cm cannot enter the main zone. It is loud, wet and not a place for anyone who dislikes crowds.
Highlights
- Mud slide, mud pool, colour mud painting and the new Mud Infinity Pool facing the sea inside the paid General Zone
- Mud Cask Zone on Mud Plaza: 20 free self-service mud massage tubs, daytime only
- Mud on the Beach: nightly EDM and DJ sets on the beach, with drone light shows at the opening ceremony (25 July 2026) and the closing night (9 August 2026)
- Free televised concerts in 2026: KBS K-POP Super Live on the opening weekend, K-Hip-hop Festival 31 July–1 August, Mud Rock Festa 7 August, Big Mud Show 8 August, TV Chosun Super Concert 9 August
- Family Zone for guardians with children aged 3–12, plus a water-park zone included with any paid wristband
- Meong-deu pet zone for leashed dogs with an ID tag (2026)
Who it suits. Best for groups of friends and families with children aged 3–12 who want an active, messy beach day; less suited to anyone who dislikes crowds, loud music or heat, and to children under 140 cm, who cannot enter the General Zone.
Getting there
From Seoul
Saemaeul or Mugunghwa train from Yongsan Station to Daecheon Station on the Janghang Line (2 h 30 m–2 h 50 m, ₩17,400 Saemaeul or ₩11,700 Mugunghwa, about 15 trains a day; there is no KTX), then a taxi of about 10 minutes to Mud Plaza. Alternatively an express bus from Central City Terminal to Boryeong Bus Terminal (about 2 h 10 m, ₩18,900 in 2024); the terminal is a 5-minute walk from Daecheon Station.
Last leg from Daecheon Station
Janghang Line (Korail Saemaeul/Mugunghwa from Yongsan). Not walkable to the beach: about 10 minutes by taxi (close to the base fare) or about 15 minutes by city bus
Getting home
Trains from Daecheon back to Yongsan take about 2 h 30 m–2 h 50 m, and express buses run from Boryeong Bus Terminal to Seoul. Check the last train in the Korail app (코레일+ / Korail+) or at the station, and the last express bus at the terminal, before the festival day. For a concert night, book a bed in Daecheon.
Parking
Public and temporary lots near the beach fill by about 10:00 on summer weekends; the public lot near Daecheon Bus Terminal usually has space.
How to switch Naver Map and Kakao Map to English
Google Maps shows train, subway and bus routes in Korea but not walking or driving directions yet, so for the walk from the station Naver Map or Kakao Map is more reliable.
Before you go
1330 · Travel hotline
The Korea Tourism Organization’s helpline answers in English, Japanese and Chinese around the clock, and in several other languages from 08:00 to 19:00. Dial 1330 from a Korean phone, or +82-2-1330 from a phone registered abroad.
112 / 119 · Emergencies
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance. Both are free from any phone. Police on 112 can add an English or Chinese interpreter to the call.
T-money card
Buy one at a convenience store such as GS25, CU or 7-Eleven and top it up there with cash. It pays for subways and buses in most cities, and for most taxis.
Maps
Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for walking and bus directions; Google Maps does not yet give walking directions in Korea. Both apps can be switched to English. Naver Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → Language (Japanese and Chinese also available). Kakao Map: Menu (≡) → Settings → App settings → Language. If the option is missing, change your phone’s language and reopen the app. Small shop names and some reviews stay in Korean.
Trains and buses
Book trains on Korail’s English site and express buses on Kobus. Holiday weekends sell out first.
